You, the petitioner, files an I-864. One parent files an I-864 as the Joint Sponsor. The other parent files an I-864A as the household member of the other parent.

They only use I-864A if you all reside at the same residence. If not, use I-864

Hi, I'm of course not the OP, but I had this same question. My stepdad is the co-sponsor for my fiance and I (I'm the USC) and he is coming here on a K-1 visa. I too was wondering if my mom would have to fill out the I-864A is a member of the household my stepdad resides in (Victor and I will live in our own apartment). I know my stepdad and myself have to fill out an I-864 each, I'm just wondering if my mother will have to fill out the I-864 or the I-864A form.

If one parent alone meets the requirements then the other parent doesn't need to sign the I-864A. If you want to include both parents incomes then you do need one to do the I-864 and the other to do the I-864A to authorize using their income.

Yes, my stepdad's income alone meets the requirements and we weren't even going to include my mom's income at all. So, just to make sure, because me and Victor are afraid of making a mistake, we don't need my mom to sign the I-864A at all if we're not including her income as a joint sponsor? Thanks!

Exactly. If they filed a joint return make sure you just use your step-dad's income from the return and not the combined amount.
