I just got my SSN number the other day, I came to the US on a K1 as you can see in my signature, I got my SSN number when my EAD came through. On my SS card it says "Valid for work only with DHS authorization"

what does this mean?? that my number is only valid for certain things or? Or that *I* am only valid for work with DNS authorization, i.e. my EAD (which I won't need for ever because my green card will be in some time soon) is sitll valid and therefore authorized.

It means you must have a EAD or green card to use the SSN to work.

Without one of thos items you are not allowed to work.

You can use the SSN for other things like bank account / health insurance / car insurance etc.

It means you need an EAD or Green Card and as it happens...YOU DO!

The SS card is not valid for work for ANYONE, not even a citizen. Whether it says that or not. Even us citizens have to present proof of work eligibility...a passport or birth certificate. SOMETHING besides a SS card.

SS cards themselves are fairly useless. Memorize the number and put the card away. I lost my card some 40 years ago and have not needed it since. I suppose I should get around to replacing it someday

As the others have said, it just means you need the EAD or green card to go along with the SSN in order to work. When you get your green card, you can go back to the SSA and have them update your status. They will then send you a new card without that stipulation printed on it.

If i read you comment correctly , you are saying your EAD came through right? If you have your EAD then you are very much authorized to work. Goodluck

Is it mandatory to change the SSN card once you get the GC or is it just so you card looks better?

Thank you

It's not mandatory but having an unrestricted card can come in handy. I changed mine. I like having an unrestricted one, makes me feel less like an alien.

Depends on how much you like waitng in line  . I know ever time we have visited the SSA office the wait is typically 1-2 hours. I think I will take the wife in after she gets citizenship to have everything taken care of. If you do not like the "Vaild for work only with DHS Authorization" then put the SSC away and only show the GC to employers. I personally have always used my US passport for completing the I-9 form. You should see some of the looks I get, but I just point out the list of approved documents in List A and most accept it without too much of a fight.

The number is what is important. How many cases of identy thieft are reported and how many of those had the actual card?

Up to you.

Dave

It is not mandatory, but it is a good idea to update your immigration status with the SSA. Also, as others have said, it is nice to have an unrestricted card without that blurb on it.
