What id we get stuck in Japan

What if a couple gets stuck in Japan over night because of a flight delay and/or no room on a stand by ticket(s)?

I'm speaking in terms of my wife who is a Filipina and myself an American who will be traveling with an approved CR-1 Visa en route to Seattle if the Good Lord allows us approval. Any thoughts?

Will leaving the airport to stay in a hotel be a problem?

Most countries will give you a temporary visa in transit. An American Citizen usually would not have any problem in Japan and the customs at Entry in Japan would probably give you a temporary visa. However, your wife is not an American Citizen so I don't know what rules might apply to her. Your question would be best answered by your Japanese Embassy in the Philipines (if that is where you will be flying from). I always try to make connecting flights in Amsterdam coz they have airport hotels, so you don't go through customs in transit.

Good Luck to you and your wife.

With your ticket for the connecting flight, you can leave the airport, but your Filipino citizen wife needs a visa. Americans can visit "visa free" for 90 days.

Japan mirrors USA immigration standards but believe it or not Japan is more strict. So she will not be able to get into Japan based without a Visa. Trafficking women from Philippines to Japan is common so they watch Filipinos coming in and out closely. I had a friend that lived there that told me how strict they are at immigration. I would not risk it. I would do my best to go through another airport that has transit hotels understanding your standby ticket means it is very cost effective for you to go the route.. Good luck!

If there should be a delay due to an airplane having technical problems or weather related, some of the Asian airline will help the passengers get a transit visa. They may even make/provide hotel arrangements & transportation between the hotel & airport.

However, if it a standby ticket, the passenger is on their own to make their own arrangements - visa (prior arrangements), hotel, transportation, etc,.

Are you planning on having check luggage? If so & since you plan on traveling with you wife then I would advice against doing standby and pay the extra and get a "guaranteed seat" ticket. You do not want her to be seating for hours (or maybe more than 1 day) in the airport waiting for seats to be available, plus there is no guarantee that the two of you will be seating together if seats become available.

I agree with the above.

Also the money you would save by getting a standby ticket will be eaten up by the hotel/transportation costs.

If the OP still want to do it (or someone else) then I would say do it through HKIA as Filipinos can travel to/stay in Hong Kong for 14 days without a visa.

When I went through the Japanese airline I was in Tokyo.

Just as an american flying through. they gave me a free 90 day visa and i could have left for a hotel if I wanted to but you can actually stay inside the airport and they will stick you in one corner of the airport and watch you LOL

now leaving and going to a hotel with a filipina.. hmm maybe a call to a Japanese embassy and ask them directly or call the airport where you will be flying into the rules.

Try Korean Airlines instead. They seem to have the lowest fares, they have a hotel in the Incheon airport if you have a layover and their seats are very generous when compared to other international carriers. You might want to try booking the flight through their website directly instead of going through the other online sites. I've been watching the prices for their flights and just before I was ready to buy the prices on the sites like orbitz and priceline went up $500 but the Korean Air site was still the same price.

The Icheon Airport Transit Hotel is great idea and some of my coworkers have used it in the past. There are two transit hotels - on the East & west wing.

The price is reasonable but not cheap for someone who is on a budget or watching their budget. One of my coworkers stayed there in December & paid about $130 for a little over 10 hours.

I visited the website for Korean Air and I tried to purchase one way tickets to from Manila to Seattle and I got this disclaimer.

"According to Philippine law, tickets for flights departing from the Philippines cannot be purchased from any region other than the Philippines. In accordance with the law, such flight tickets are not available in Korean Air's homepage.....etc."

Any suggestions guys?

You can have your wife pay for the ticket with funds you send to her or you can use a carrier where this is not an issue. This has something to do with the Philippine government wanting their travel tax money from the sale of the ticket.

Its a big pain in the butt. I ended up just ending her the money and let her buy the ticket. There is a lady that works for Virginia Beach Travel in Manila that got her a great ticket on KAL-Direct Manila-Korea-Atl at the last minute for a great price. Try her Try this lady. She works for a travel agency in the PI. Got us our ticket las minute KAL Korea to Atl. Great price. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1395999119[/url]
