I highly recommend Pimsleur over Rosetta Stone for learning a foreign language. I've used it for Arabic and had native Arabic speakers swear my parents are from Sudan. Get the highest level available in the target language.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have RS for Vietnamese (already said this I think) and found it difficult to learn since it jumps you right into the program without any basics to learn from. I see Pimsleur does have English for Vietnamese Speakers and I can buy the mp3 CDs in increments or as a set. I'll take a closer look at this program and will consider it as well.

Yeah, I took a language acquisition course and they said that RS teaches you vocabulary and Pimsleur teaches you to be conversational and I can vouch for that personally.

i've always wondered how a vn girl meet an american guy also. that could be a whole new thread how you met your vn beneficiary (most viet petitioner would say pre-arranged and about 35k usd. i kid )

have been here 30 years.

By the way, Việt Kiều US citizens are just as much Americans as us "White Boys". With the exception of Native Americans, all of us are immigrants.

I admit the relationship is difficult when only my fiancee can write but has a very time speaking. She has been going to an English tutor 2-3x a week for the past year and a half, but has no one to talk to in her hometown who speaks language. I know she is trying her best to speak the language, but because she is shy in a sense, it is hard to hear what she is trying to say to me because it will be said in a soft spoken voice.

We definitely have a long ways to go (I admit that), but we both have to work hard to overcome that barrier.

It's much easier to write and read than to speak and listen. Also, in Vietnam, English teaching usually stresses on writing, reading, and grammar rather than speaking and listening. I did quite well on SAT and TOEFL but it still took me about the first 6 months in college to speak. One important factor is that I was very shy to speak and my voice is so soft. People couldn't understand me neither. Even when I was about graduate from college, my speaking score in the English test is still the lowest even though it'd been improved a lot over the time I was in college.

I'd suggest American Accent Training for her. It's really good for listening and speaking.

It has been one week since the Embassy sent out Packet 3 and still no word that it has arrived at my fiancee's house. I know the mail there is very slow and unreliable at times, but one week to go an hour and a half away?? If she doesn't receive it by next Wednesday, I will tell her to go somewhere to print out the DS-230 form. Is this typical for her to wait this long? Hopefully she or someone in her family who is going to HCMC soon can drop off the packet at the Embassy window and not wait another week for them to receive all the paperwork.

our noa3 was just a letter with a link with instructions to print out the ds230s etc. if i were you i'd just go ahead and fill out all the paperworks and send it back in...the sooner they get those the sooner you'll have an interview date. i wouldn't wait to physically receive the noa3.

Not much to the 2001, just have her print one out from the website, and then fill it out by hand. Also need the DS-230 Part 1

Dont forget to have her write in the Case Number (HCM# ) on the forrm, instructions are also in Viet

yea basically just follow the k-visa link brian gave to fill out the necessary docs. next step would be the appointment letter which you will need to pay the visa fees and schedule a physical. i suggest IOM over cho ray as they're more professional. your fiancee will need all her vaccines in order before she can get a physical, so be cognizant of that.

i would start gathering the stuff needed for the interview now.
