There is no "equivalence" as in some sort of exam or process. For work related matters, your degree is as good -at least in theory- as anyone; but some employers might shy away because there might not have an easy way to verify experience (as I presume you have none in the in US); and that is the key: the first job is the most difficult because you do not have the "history" you would, have you been here longer. In some cases, the kinds of jobs existing for your specialty might require a security clearance and as before, you would have a hard time getting one.

First you want to define a more targeted type of job and investigate potential positions and demand for those, consider that certain areas of the country would have a demand and other none; and you could also look into pursuing a PhD, that might be easier because admissions are based on credentials and colleges are more used to dealing with foreign degrees. You might be required to take some additional classes as remediation, but it shouldn't be too much; at same time, you want to investigate what your prospects are as PhD in Physics. Finally, perhaps continuing studies in an area that is complementary to Physics or in which your degree is a plus.

Hey!

I actually only have 2 years of a British degree and I want to continue studying out in America. I visited a local University to where I will shortly be living in the states with my fiance'. They told me that they will have to see the transcript of my degree and then they would determine what year I may need to enter at depending on how well my studies compare with an equivalent subject at their university.

I would suggest you visit a local University and set up a meeting, so that you can figure out where you stand in the American system.

Luck!

In the past ten years I've personally known two friends that were physicists in the States and both came from abroad. One was from the Ukraine and the other from Nepal. Both had a Masters from their country and applied for a PhD program in the States and both were accepted. They each went to different University's in the States and also their timing was seperte. The Ukrainian came first and finished first and the Nepali came second and finished later. So they had different application and acceptance processes. During the course of their study they both became eligable for a US Masters first and both choose to apply for that and do the commencement so that they would look more eligable to employers if need be. Though their research work was like their fulltime job and kept them busy until completion of their PhD's. After they both graduated one moved to California and the other to South Dakota for work in their fields. So it is possible to continue your study for a PhD. You just have to research the University's here and apply yourself and see where you get accepted. Neither of them were able to travel to the States to visit the University's they applied to before their acceptance. They both did it site unseen but also had help from alumni and faculty at their current University about programs in the States. So you may ask some of your fellow classmates and profs for guidance on where to go. I don't know how this will affect your visa status however. A student visa is different than a family based visa.

Your first step should be to contact the universities that you are considering. They all have different criteria regarding foreigners and foreign degrees. Get your school papers translated to make it easier for them, get transcripts and if somewhat possible get a translation of your thesis. With that in hand they will be able to evaluate your degree and your field of specialty. That should make it easy to get into a PHD program.

Good luck.

You could also take some additional classes to get licensing as a teacher for physics which definitely validates your Masters.

All done ;-)
