Hi,

We're in the process of N-400 expedited naturalization (through Section 319b). We just filed a few weeks ago, and my wife received notice for her biometrics appointment in about 10 days from today.

Does getting this letter mean that there's already been some sort of initial review on her application that we passed, possibly at the National Benefits Center? Or is this something they do regardless? I'm trying not to obsess, but wondering what's happening here.

Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated

Since my wife had her biometrics just eleven months before for ROC, for us it meant taking another day off of work, getting up at 2:00 AM in the morning for another 450 mile trip. We had that same trip for her AOS, ROC, and then for her N-400, 1,350 miles of driving for the same old set of fingerprints.

Yes, they are taking your mug shots now, even though they still want you to enclose two passport type photos with your application. So dress appropriately, least from your chest up. If you are a woman, leave your jewelry at home and don't smile.

Getting a biometrics appointment is good news that your application was initially accepted. Least they didn't return it for doing something really naughty like sending it in two seconds too soon.

All it means is they have accepted the application...

Your application will be reviewed when they get to it, and then is when you will receive the next item in the list...

Up until your interview, you are never "approved". Only until you receive your "recommended for approval" is when you can take that sigh of relief!

Thank you for the insight, everyone. I understand that nothing is final until the actual oath, of course. My question was simply whether getting the biometrics notice means that some sort of initial review has already been passed... Any other information would be great.

it really means nothing...biometrics is just another step in the process. all they've done since they got your application is just to make sure that it was in good order, that you signed where you were supposed to, sent in the required documentation and sent a check in. probably takes someone 10 - 15 minutes max to do all that. it's just that they have piles of applications coming for all kinds of different things and as you know gov't employees aren't incentivised to get more cases done on a given day so they take their sweet old time.
