No one major will "assure" you a job. You have to actually know your stuff and love it to be good at it. So don't pick something like CS because you hear it has a good salary if you aren't spending your free time writing fun free apps for your computer/phone/whatever. An employer will pick the person who is doing that over you. And if you aren't good, you'll be outsourced to India.

That's true with quite a lot of things, actually. Pick something people don't want to or can't outsource and look up typical salaries and work conditions.

What motivates you, what do you want? Figure that out first. Are you willing to make the ethical tradeoffs needed to go into banking or vulture capitalism? Are you willing to do the schooling and long hours to be a nurse or doctor? Are you willing to take math classes to be an engineer? You can make lots of money in all of them, but none come free...

If you have no idea, and you're just starting school, take a well-balanced set of classes with real math.

That is not completely true. My husband is a CS major and has gets plenty of unsolicited job offers on a regular basis. They do outsource a lot of the grunt work stuff to developers in India, but there are plenty of software jobs that are impossible to outsource.

Re-read what I wrote again:

And if you aren't good, you'll be outsourced to India.

If you are good, you can't be outsourced. If you aren't good, I don't want to hire you. If you don't have 5 years of experience with J2EE and 10 with .NET, company X won't want to hire you[*]. Two years from now, it will be some completely different language set that is "in demand". If you love what you're doing, you'll probably already know it. If you picked your job because you'd "get rich", you'll have problems keeping your skillset up to date.

Sure, you'll get plenty of unsolicited requests for current resumes, but those aren't instantly actual job *offers*. I do know people who are getting headhunter mail based on their free software work, but that still isn't a contract. It is something they could probably get hired for, if they wanted to switch countries.

[*] First jargon-goop that came to mind, not a study recommendation; note that many tech companies I know of /are/ still hiring

Thats not true you can become a phlebotomist in about 6 months.

You can study and be an Xray tech or ultrasound tech in 1-2 years.

There are medical transcription programs that are 1 year that let you work in a doctors office or at home.

Double-check the school you pick to learn that at. Those are going to be vocational schools, so search for lawsuits and online complaints against them. You can quickly get qualifications for a phlebotomist, but will anyone hire you without a year (or 5) of experience? Can you volunteer that long to get it?

Talk to recent grads and current students, is the school a scam or are people actually getting hired? You don't want to find out after you graduated and have student loan debt.

Some might argue that all school is a scam atm, as nobody is hiring. ;)

I read your statement just fine and I stand by what I said. There are plenty of software jobs here in the US that can not be outsourced regardless if the worker is good or bad.. software architects for example. It is similar to manufacturing where any mindless job can be outsourced, but they still need people here to develop innovative & state-of-the-art technology.

In my husband's case, he did get actual offer letters (and not calls from headhunters or requests for CV) during the heights of the recession. In fact he had 2 ex-employers offering him a pay & a promotion if he went back. But I suppose that it is mostly because he networked pretty well over the past few years.

And keeping up to date with your skillset is true with any technical industry.

Engineering.

Also, I have some friends who studies speech therapy in Ireland and they get head hunted regularly by US hospitals/ clinics.

I agree. I am currently in graduate school for speech pathology and our class is already receiving job offers though we aren't set to graduate till May 2013. It's a good field! Very competitive, but a very fulfilling one!!

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Here is a list of the least common jobs so anything other than these should be a peace of cake.370

17. Prosthodontists: 670

Average annual salary: $139,620

Kaitlin Madden is a writer and blogger for CareerBuilder.com and its job blog, The Work Buzz. She researches and writes about job search strategy, career management, hiring trends and workplace issues.

I don't know about some of the other salaries or incomes, but as an active prosthodontist, I would be very disappointed with myself and feel my education was a waste if I were not making at least twice that much after taxes.

Then again you would be looking at 10 years of post high school education and very likely well over $400,000 in expenses.

Specifically in Colorado, the energy industry is booming.

I would also say GPS-type industries are also booming here.

You could find many different jobs in these fields though - just because it's energy, doesn't mean you will be working in oil fields. There's accountants, marketing, HR....tons of different jobs.

Also I would look at careerbuilder.com and just browse the jobs in Colorado.

  • 2 weeks later...

I would love to go in the medical field, but it's so long and expensive to study... :(

Med school might be expensive for the medical field includes health related areas such lab tech, dental assistant, hygienist, physical therapy, nursing, etc etc... many programs are reasonable in length and cost. The starting incomes and opportuniest ares not bad at all.
