Your personal effects and property are not taxed when you move to the U.S.

When you say "we", do you mean your family be traveling with you? Rules for them are different; the tax free amount visitors can bring to the U.S. as presents depends on the length of their stay.

You shouldn't have a problem doing that. Have a general itemized / boxed list with you just in case they ask contents of trailer, but they never asked nor looked in our UHaul.

Right - most of us have found that the border guards generally aren't looking in the truck/ trailer and seldom do they even look at the list. But it's good to have the list prepared. They aren't particularly interested in whether you have new items from your shower or something you've owned 20 yrs either. I came prepared with a list and even receipts from small things like my computer and yr old TV, but I was never asked for any of it.

While technically anything less than a year old - even if it is your personal belongings - is subject to duty, the border guards are not really interested in charging it for personal items. They are more concerned about someone trying to import duty free new items that they intend to 'sell'. So, make a list of what you are bringing and you can probably make up a separate list called Shower/Wedding Presents and itemize your gifts there. I suspect the border won't be at all interested in your lists, but have them prepared just in case.

We did the same thing on my POE - my husband flew up, rented a vehicle at the airport, drove across the border to pick up me, my cats and my fragile belongings and things I didn't want to trust to the movers, including my wedding dress. I had everything itemized and listed as to less than a year old and older. They weren't at all interested in anything except processing the K-1 visa.

Good luck!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
