This whole thing is an issue only because employers commonly provide health insurance. Why should your employer care about what kind of health care you receive any why?

Because of government interference.

During WW2 employers were offering increasing wages to whatever talent they could hire that was not away in the war effort which hurt a lot of businesses as good employees were being "stolen" with higher wages.

Roosevelt in his infinite wisdom froze wage increases. So instead companies began offering things such as health care insurance, pretty much unused until them, and paid vacation. After the war they became marketing tools to attract employees and eventually expected.

One of the solutions to this health care "crisis" would be to simply detach medical insurance from employment, allow interstate commerce in insurance, open the market to medical insurance as it is to auto and home insurance and let people buy their own as we do with other insurance. The competition would keep prices down just as it does for those other coverages. Employers could simply convert the money they pay now for coverage to your salary, eliminate income tax and implement the FAIR TAX and VOILA! Problem solved. You not only get the money to buy your own, it is TAX FREE.

YOU STOP IT GARY...JUST STOP IT!!!

That makes sense, besides, there you go with that free market nonsense. The worst thing about your proposal...hell, it would work! Now you know the statist would have none of that, you mean you want to get government out of the health insurance industry and allow folks to buy health insurance across state lines? You want to give folks free will to decide for themselves? No way, then politicians lose control of one of the best golden gooses they have and could not use it as a wedge issue.

Besides all the folks that depend on the benevolent federal government to steal on their behalf and the politicians that use them like puppets would wet their panties at the thought of millions of folks taking charge and making their own decisions about health insurance.

The status quo works well...it keeps campaign contributions flowing, it keeps politicians in power and it keeps the populace fighting each other. Why on earth would the powers-that-be want to do something that works? No upside for them!

Because certain churches have core teachings that they can't approve of. Yes some Catholics are in agreement but have to follow what their church says. This was a direct attack on the church itself. Catholics will not accept this. Many Catholics came out for Obama and the health care act but they were promised exemptions. The Church itself received the exemptions but then they told them that would be all the exemptions allowed. None of their services that are non profit are going to be allowed to be exempt. The church CAN'T accept this. It was a huge stab in the back.

IDK if that's the real issue. I work for one of the largest Catholic non profits in the country. All the health plans we can choose from cover birth control, and always have. It's never been an issue before. I would assume people who don't want to use birth control, for religious reasons or other - don't use it.

It matters a lot to have the Feds interfere in the core teachings of the church. They have just told the Catholic church what it is they are allowed to do here and teach. The U.S. can't overturn any Churches doctrine at will like this. Sure they did it to the Mormons but this is a world wide major religion. Their doctrine is pretty set on this. The Catholic congregation itself may sin but they want their kids to be raised with the church teachings that are set in stone. The Church tells them to fight this the congregation will take notice. That congregation votes in the past over 50% to the Democrats but now if they go away that is a lot of votes in this country. Obama will back down though or make some deal. The last deal was stupid of him to try and he will next time be more serious.

If you are saying it's more about the principle then I agree. But it's a bit of a slippery slope here too. It's safe to say people take their politics and religion pretty seriously. I don't want my government interfering with my freedom of religion, but I also don't want my religion telling me who I can and can't vote for.

Or as one of my coworkers sometimes says - they might call us a flock, but we ain't sheep.
