Hi,

My husband just passed his drivers test, and went to get his actual license and they told him that he needs all the proof of the green card. We are still pending in our application. The last we heard is that his case was transferred to the California Service Center for processing.

So what documents do we need to bring? I assume he CAN still get a license. They mentioned that his visa was expired...but we are in process.

Has anyone run into this problem. They gave him 90 days to get the license.

Please help.

There is nothing you can do but wait for the GC to come through. I am very sure you will have it in hand before the 90days dateline expires. Goodluck

Hi Ukover, I had the same problem, passed my test in October but the license they gave me was only for a month in line with the expiry of my I.94. I asked about this at the time and was told I could get a more extended licence upon production of my EAD card. I advised USCIS of this and the EAD was received in January, I therefore went 6 weeks without a licence. I now have another licence valid until the EAD expiry which is about 12 months. Still waiting for my AOS and green card, when this is received I will be able to renew my licence in line with the Green Card. I should tell you though that every time you get a licence irrespective of how long it is valid for you will have to pay $20. Chase up your EAD hope you get it quicker than I did. Best of luck.

Topic has been moved from AOS forum to Moving Here and Your New Life in America forum as getting a driver's license, while affected by the AOS process, is not part of the AOS process and is better suited for discussion in this forum.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I-551 is the number assigned to the GC by the USCIS. There is a I-551 stamp you can get that acts just like the physical GC. If your AOS is approved but the GC has yet to arrive you can request the I-551 stamp to show the DMV in order to renew your DL. If your AOS is not approved by the time the DL expires and you do not have the EAD card either then you will not be able to renew the DL. This is one of the drawbacks to the K-1 visa process.

Good luck,

Dave
