European board needs more drama!

Wow, reading some of the other regional boards here is kind of crazy. Polygamy, fights about sending money home to parents, how hot newly-imported wives are, harsh consulates, "omg he left me once he got off the plane" scammers.... It makes those of us with European SOs just seem boring. I suppose I should be glad that we don't have any of those problems though!

I do kind of wonder why people are moving to the US and not the other way around though...

How does having a hot newly-imported wife make the problem list?

it upsets the girlfriend

Ok, that isn't exactly a problem. But I don't see threads here praising European women!

Of course, there was someone who published a book called something like "How to get a European man". Don't suppose anybody used it? :D

I do kind of wonder why people are moving to the US and not the other way around though...

I am Swedish and my wife is American. She has two kids from a previous relationship. I have no kids. I know English (I have, in fact, worked as an English teacher quite a bit). My wife doesn't know Swedish.

I guess that's the short answer as to why I'm moving to America and my wife isn't moving to Sweden.

My wife doesn't know Swedish.

This is the main reason why Marco is moving to the states. I don't know Dutch. I try, and I sound like a complete idiot. (and i can't roll my tongue, at all lol)

Me trying to pronounce Dutch (with either a US-Southern or a German accent) is always good comedy for my Dutch in-laws. I've finally got a few of the harder sounds now, and can even say them sometimes. I can't roll my r either. So now I get to try and teach my family ---- they have to be able to pronounce people's names, after all!

And my lovely Dutchie has gotten very good at somehow recognizing very mangled versions of his name. I always wonder how someone else calling his name will try to pronounce it, and it always ends up bad enough that I didn't even figure that's what they were trying to say.

Between the first and last name, there are two trilled r's, the ui sound, AND the ij sound (which gets turned into a "t" for some reason, it seems).

Hehe, reminds me of the very first time I actually called my wife on the phone. We'd been chatting a lot on MSN and it was a Sunday afternoon/evening Central European time and the Internet wasn't working like it's s'posed to. I got so frustrated that before I knew it, I sat there with a telephone in my hand, wondering if I'd dialed the right number. It was Melissa's mom who answered the phone. I presented myself and asked if I could speak to Melissa. My name is Magnus, in Swedish we pronounce it "Mang-nus". Her mom said Melissa wasn't in at the moment, which frustrated the H-E-double hockeystick out of me since I KNEW she was at home, I'd chatted with her on MSN 5 minutes earlier...

If memory serves me right, Melissa called me back a couple minutes later. Her mom had told her "Minus the telemarketer" had called for her. So feel free to call me Minus. ;)
