So I was sitting here doing my taxes today, and had a thought. Some of you may know my situation, but last March I brought my now ex-fiancee here to the US. She was here for 2 months, and we both decided it was in our best interest not to get married. We got along great, but I know it was a tough adjustment for her and saw it was not going to work. Although I respect the hell out of her saying something before we got married, and wish nothing but the best. We still remain friends, and that's good for me. :)

At any rate, I never thought about asking to claim the K-1 fee on my taxes in 2010. Not really sure why I didn't think of it before, but I'm thinking about it now. Also in 2011 would I be able to claim any flight purchases to get her here to the US, and back again to Russia. As we all know those are not cheap either. What else could we look at as well? What would we file these under using Turbo Tax or Tax Act software?

So for myself, and everyone else on here during tax season, what can, and can we not claim on taxes?

Thanks all.

You can claim just about anything as a tax write-off but ask yourself before you do:

If the IRS calls you in for an audit, can you financially afford to pay if they

don't deem your write-off's as acceptable?

Nice try, but don't even go there. This is considered a personal expense, the same as the cost of getting a divorce is. And I can tell you that many would love to have written off those costs.

Some may try to call it a bad debt, but it won't qualify for that either. :crying:

Probably you would only be able to claim some of the travel and related costs, if, you can show a business purpose. Again, that is not a likely scenario.

But, it is really worth a laugh, thanks for that.

You can't write off any of the expenses, but of course once you're married you'll be able to claim married status, which will help a lot. If your spouse has dependent(s), you'll be able to claim them also. But you cannot claim any of the actual immigration expenses.

(IANAL, talk to a tax expert before actually doing any of these things, yadda yadda...)

Nothing.

nothing that i know of. maybe some stuff falls under "moving expenses" but idk.

Moving expenses must be related to a job change. A K-1 could not possible meet that requirement.

I think most of us are aware of the tax code involving marital status. And yeah, that marriage tax benefit is great. In 20 years you might recover half of the cost to get married in the first place.

You need to marry a woman with two children and put them all through college claiming the credits for that Plus the child credits, $1000 for every child under age 18 PLUS all the dependent deductions. You are pretty well assured a HUGE tax return every year.

And it only costs you ALL your money. What a deal!!!!!!!!

PS Thats how we pay our summer vacations to Russia/Ukraine and this year perhaps to another EU country or two once we all have our US passports!

Thanks to our favorite president, college tuition (up to something like $4500?) is deductible this year.

This $1000 credit is for children under the age of 17. Sure wish they had this when my kids were small.

What would we file these under using Turbo Tax or Tax Act software? Prison

So for myself, and everyone else on here during tax season, what can, and can we not claim on taxes? Say hello to Bernie Madoff when you share a cell with him. It's a free country if you're willing to go to prison.
