Hello everyone,

I'm new here so I hope I'm posting on the right board. Anyway I have a question regarding acquiring old tax returns.

My husband is in the US and I and in the UK, obviously we need his previous 3 years of tax returns to fill out the I-864 form.

The problem is... he has NEVER filed his tax returns. He does pay tax each month from his salary, but I have no idea if it's the right amount. To be honest I don't really understand how the US system works.

How do we go about filing back taxes? Has anyone done this before? Is it even possible?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes, it is totally possible to file back taxes. And he will probably get money back if he can read the papers. If he works for someone else, they will have been sending him W-2 forms. Has he kept them? Otherwise, I hope he hasn't changed jobs... He'll have to go to HR and get a new copy I guess... You'll need the numbers on them to do your taxes. The forms will ask for the amount in box #2 or something.

Under the US tax system, there are several different main forms you can use to file taxes. There's the 1040EZ, which is very simple --- one page. It might be what you want to do here, unless he isn't eligible for some reason or unless you qualify for various deductions. In which case, you use a different one: read through the long form instructions, it will give you an idea. Does have have income from anywhere "odd"? (extra forms to file, "schedules") Does he pay student loans? (There's a deduction, but not if you use the 1040EZ.)

If you can read instructions and follow them, you can file your own taxes. The local library will have the different forms. And books like "filing taxes for dummies" to help you!
