Three-state sweep by Santorum bolsters his case

By Susan Page, USA TODAY

Former Massachusetts governor

Mitt Romney, who says he's on a clear path to the Republican presidential nomination, hit a speed bump Tuesday night as rival Rick Santorum won an upset victory in the Colorado caucuses after scoring easy wins in the Minnesota caucuses and the non-binding Missouri primary.

"Tonight was a victory for the voices of our party, conservatives and Tea Party people," Santorum told a cheering rally in St. Charles, Mo., before the final results in Colorado were known. He called President Obama an elitist "who thinks he's smarter than you" and Romney a flawed standard-bearer who would be unable to draw sharp contrasts with him in the fall.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I don't stand here today to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney," Santorum declared. "I stand here to be the conservative alternative to Barack Obama."

In Denver, after the earlier races were called, Romney told a more subdued group of supporters that it had been "a good night for Rick Santorum." Colorado's returns were being reported more slowly than in Minnesota and Missouri.

The results didn't affect the math of the delegate count — no delegates were bound by the vote — but it did alter the momentum of the race.

Read all On Politics postsSantorum's victories, his first since the opening Iowa caucuses, were sure to energize his followers, boost his fundraising and ensure that he'll stay in the race at least through the Super Tuesday contests on March 6. It bolsters his argument that he, not former House speakerNewt Gingrich, should be seen as the strongest challenger to Romney.

For Romney, the setbacks were likely to raise questions about his claim of inevitability — he had targeted only Obama on the stump Tuesday, as though the GOPnomination already was his — and carried a particular sting in Minnesota, a state he decisively won four years ago.

"I think the big story coming out tonight is going to be it's very hard for the elite media to portray Romney as the inevitable nominee," Gingrich told CNN from Ohio. "After tonight, you'll see this is a wide-open race."

Even before the returns came in, his campaign had sent out a pre-emptive "reality check," downplaying the importance of the contests and touting Romney's organizational and financial edge in the primaries and caucuses that follow.

"John McCain lost 19 states in 2008, and we expect our opponents to notch a few wins too," the memo by Romney political director Rich Beeson read. "But unlike the other candidates, our campaign has the resources and organization to keep winning over the long run."

In Missouri, Santorum defeated Romney by 2-1. In Minnesota, Santorum also held a double-digit lead. Paul was second, Romney third. In Colorado, Romney ended the night in second, followed by Gingrich in third.

Nice to see conservatism making a comeback.

Pretty soon people will shift all the way through Santorum and over to Paul.

Fact That No One Likes Him May Be Hurting Romney

Could Foil Bid to Become First Openly Assholic President

DENVER – Exit polls from last night’s Republican contests reveal that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s key obstacle to gaining the GOP nomination is the fact that voters cannot stand him.

According to Davis Logsdon, who conducted the polls for the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, “Despite his superb organization, funding, and ground game, Mitt Romney is having trouble overcoming the perception among voters that he is a ginormous #######.”

Mr. Logsdon said that these obstacles “could prove fatal to his historic bid to become the nation’s first openly assholic President.”

Exit polls taken last night bear out that theory, with a majority of voters agreeing with the statement, “I think Mitt Romney is so odious, I would rather vote for a random doofus I’ve never heard of who goes around in sweater vests.”

The beneficiary of that sentiment last night was former Sen. Rick Santorum, who told supporters at a victory rally in Missouri, “I support the rights of the unborn child until it’s born and wants a gay marriage.”

Speaking to supporters in Denver, Mr. Romney uttered what some political experts are calling a possible gaffe: “I don’t care about all the people who didn’t vote for me. They just envy my massive wealth. And poor people? They can curl up and die, and I won’t lose a wink of sleep. I bet you a million crisp dollars from my vault in Geneva.”

Pretty soon people will shift all the way through Santorum and over to Paul.

 That's funnier than the piece I just posted.

Santorum is a RINO also. If everyone liked Bush Jr. then they will love Santorum. It is fun to see Romney brought down to earth. As for Ron Paul. People are basically RINO's in the GOP. They want the status quo.

Watch Romney target Santorum over the next few weeks. Carefully so, however, because he needs both Newt and Rick stick it out in the run for awhile longer. If either of them were to drop out of the race prior to Super Tuesday, the other is bound to crush Mitt.

Don't agree. It takes a lot of money to win super Tuesday. Romney has the money already. I am expecting Romney to be so far ahead after that day that he will be getting asked who will be his Vice President. Gingrich is a goner. The money is moving away from him. Santorum has the momentum now. He will be on all the news outlets and when the RINO's hear him they will like but he will need to stay on message and not say something too stupid. The problem Santorum has is he has no money. I am expecting an influx of cash but doubt he can pull in that much that quick. I will be watching to see the money flowing and from whom.

Mitt will seal the deal on Super Tuesday only if both Newt and Rick stick around. As long as they split the "conservative vote" in the primaries, Mitt will look good. If the "conservative vote" doesn't split because either of the two has dropped out, then Mitt will not be able to pull down a significant win on Super Tuesday.
