I-131 form Question

On Part 5 of the I-131 form it ask, "Since becoming an Permanent Resident of the USA, have you ever filed a Federal Income Tax return as a non-resident or failed to file a Federal income tax return..........."

The reason I ask is while awaiting her visa overseas, we were already married, so I was able to file jointly with my wife on my Federal Income Tax return, does she mean she filed as a 'non-resident'? I would think so, as we were married but she was not a resident yet, but we filed jointly and she received a tax ID number.

Last question, where in my wife's visa is the alien number? Is it the 8-digit registration number in the upper right hand corner?

A# or Alien registration number generally has

A# in front of it or fully says Alien Registration Number.

Its found on the NOA2 or the Visa. The number that should be used is the one on the NOA2 as frequently the number on the visa is incorrect or its not even on the visa.

It asks about tax returns since becoming a permanent resident, not before. She wasn't a permanent resident when she was overseas waiting for her visa, was she?
