We spend about $500 a month for myself, my husband, my sons (who live with us half the week), and our daughter who is only an infant and doesn't count yet, lol. We don't buy formula or diapers/wipes (we cloth diaper)so that helps a lot. We eat out a couple times a month so sometimes it does go over the $500 but not by much.

"The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

Haven't shopped for the three of us since Glyn went back to the UK, but it was about 75.00 a week for the three of us and two cats. That includes household items like paper goods. I am a coupon user...and I shop the sales and plan my meals around what's on sale. Like this past week, boneless skinless chicken breasts were on sale at the store I normally shop at for 1.99 a pound. If I were shopping for the three of us, I would have bought a ton of chicken and frozen meal size portions. Planning a menu every week can be time consuming on a Sunday...but it really helps during the week. There is no coming home from work and trying to figure out what to have for dinner.

We just bought two big turkeys at .99 per lb. We almost never look at anything over $2 a pound for meat. We buy in bulk too, like five gallons of cooking oil at a time and spices in three-pound containers. Rice in 50 lb bags. But still we're at probably $800 per month for four of us. Includes diapers and formula, which we buy in bulk too. I can't believe people can buy small packages of diapers and some of these liquid formulas OMG!

So true. Bulk is the way to go. A good investment is the fee for a Cosco card where you have great bulk deals.

Sheesh, I'm alone waiting for my fiance and I spend about $400 a month on groceries for just me. That's 3 meals a day... and for breakfast I usually have just yogurt/fruit/nuts. Where are you guys shopping so cheap?! I didn't think I was doing too bad until I saw these replies :o

I do a lot of bulk shopping at Sam's Club (wholesaler) and most of the rest in Walmart, as well as growing some of my own veggies, using left overs in next day's dish (small bit of veggies left over becomes a veggie omlet, small bits of noodles becomes the kids lunch, microwaves etc).

$400 for one person is a lot though... do you eat out every lunchtime? Even if you only buy a $5 sub, chips and a drink that could come to close of $200 per month.

I'm not going to lie; I do eat a lot of steak! Let's see that's $4.44 a meal. I eat a lot of the organic, free range, blah, blah, blah though... It's probably more like $70 a week,

Funny, I rarely eat out. The last two weeks I have more than usually since I haven't felt much like cooking. For lunch I might have veggies, a bit of potatoe, and some kind of meat. So yeah, probably more like $70. So, like $280 a month... That sounds better.

We budget it to be around $150 a week (2 of us + a preschooler). Sometimes we go over so about $900-$1,000 a month. We do eat healthy, organic, whole food only which is a little expensive, but we would rather cut down on something else than food and items of daily use.

I think this really needs to be tracked carefully for people to give accurate answers. We have been using an excel spreadsheet and entering receipts for the last couple of months.

Alaska is more expensive than the average for the lower '48, but we shop in bulk and are careful about prices. Sam's Club is awesome on some things but on others it is actually more expensive. With a family of four and two kids in diapers we're running about $600 a month. But we budget gasoline too, because it's a long ways to town. Including that it's about $50 in the summer and $30 in the winter when we hunker down and don't travel much.

We went six weeks without leaving the cabin last year and spent $600 at Sam's Club in one trip. It was great watching the bank account during that six weeks because hardly anything was going out...
