"If the price of Abortion were suddenly raised to $20,000 there would be a precipitous drop in the number of abortions."

The premise here is that the price has been raised to $20,000

There would still be a demand for abortion even at that price so

the number of $20,000 abortions would increase not decrease as you stated.

The number of abortions would decrease because a lot of people could not afford it.

It is simple economics

Is abortion OK if you pay $20,000 for it?

We may see a return to the good old days. The number of $20 DIY abortions would increase, as would the number of $100000 surgeries for emergency hysterectomy, perforated colon, and peritoneal rupture repair.

I agree with that

Is abortion OK if you pay $20,000 for it?

yes

yes

It is amazing that some politician has yet to cash in on this compromise which will satisfy everyone on both sides of the issue

"I am pro-choice but only if abortions are expensive!"

With every six abortions you get a dozen free egg rolls?

Nope, people spend $900 on iPads so it shouldn't be a problem to buy expensive health insurance.

Huh? I'm not talking about health insurance here, I'm talking about caring for a kid for the rest of their life.

A one time purchase of an iPad has nothing to do with continuous for childcare. Note that in my original scenario, it was a kid with birth defects. If someone didn't have the money for an abortion, I doubt they'd have money for prenatal care or childcare.

But thanks for pointing out that I should be buying iPads instead of health insurance.

He does not know anything about caring for children. Not his fault.

Oh, now I get it. Because you feel this compromise will satisfy everyone

I am pro choice, I do not care if it satisfies everyone.

I suggested that IF your idea had any merit, a politician would have used it as a compromise. They have not. This could be because thousands of polititcans are not as clever as you, or it could be because the idea has no merit.

I never suggested that abortions should cost $20,000, I merely pointed out that if they did cost $20,000 there would be fewer abortions.

that was in response to Ippsy saying

"Nobody is more likely to get an abortion because it is cheap"

The point is price does matter.

Moral aspect? Is it moral to tell someone they have to be forced to have a baby with Down's syndrome? What next, will you force women to go off all medication during pregnancy? It would make the baby healthier after all! (Mom might die though.) Where does it stop?

If someone is on tetragenic drugs, and accidentally gets pregnant, are you for forcing them to have a baby with birth defects? Are you offering to take care of it to?

I'd love to see an example of an actual ad that is marketing birth control to young people. I can't think of any condom that has a cartoon mascot, and I don't think condoms even get TV ads in the USA. In fact, I'm not sure I've seen /any/ ad for birth control here.

OK, your going to the extremes to try and make a point. My stand on abortion is different than most Christians; I'm still pro-life but that wasn't my point. The value of life tends to be the issue not to hate on women.

Also, your last paragraph helps prove my point. I do think that we have gone a little to the crazy side when it comes to this but no need to worry Obama is coming to the rescue. Your boss will soon have to supply it free of charge.

Framing the argument is key.

If the question is should we kill babies the answer is no

If the question is should women have a right to control their own bodies and whats going on inside them then the answer is yes

so it is important to ask the right question if you want a particular answer

OK, should abortion be illegal? Which one of your answers trumps the other and why? For me the babies right to exist trumps the woman right(for the most part, there is exceptions)to not give birth.

Making abortion illegal would do nothing else but increase the amount of DIY abortions and abortions done illegally (at a higher price, of course). It would also possibly generate a need for abortion tourism, increase in passport issuance and travel to countries with less strict abortion laws.

Increasing the cost of abortion to, say, $20000, would change very little in my opinion. It would be cheaper to hop on a plane to Europe for a few hundred bucks and enjoy abortion and medical care in one of the european countries that allow it.

I'm from Poland, one of the few remaining European countries where abortion laws are strict and this is exactly how things work there.

Cheers!
