Israel attack on Iran 'imminent', US defence chief predicts

How Israel would attack

A military strike on Iran by Israel could take place as early as April, according to US intelligence.

Tehran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei yesterday inflamed the crisis when he said Israel was a “cancerous tumour that should be cut and will be cut”.

He also ranted during Friday prayers that any American military action against his country would just make Iran stronger.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta – a former CIA boss – indicated that an attack by Israel was “imminent”. The Jewish state could strike as early as April to ensure Iran does not finish building a nuclear weapon, he claimed.

Khamenei said yesterday that any US action against Iran would backfire and the “painful and crippling” Western sanctions will only increase Iran’s resilience.

He said: “Americans say all options are on the table – even the option of military strike. Any military strike is 10 times more harmful for America. Such threats show that America has no way but using force and bloodshed to achieve its goals. Such sanctions will benefit us.

“They will make us more self-reliant. We would not achieve military progress if sanctions were not imposed on Iran’s military sector. More imposed pressures mean more self-reliance for Iran.

“Sanctions are beneficial also because it makes us more determined not to change our nuclear course. Iran will not change its nuclear course because of sanctions....”

Israel is the only country in the Middle East to have nuclear warheads and is believed to have a stock of some 400 at secret desert locations.

It has already written up military plans for a lone strike on about a dozen Iranian nuclear sites using F15 and F16 fighter jets and pilotless drones.

It also has a fleet of five “Dolphin Class” submarines, which are among the most advanced in the world. These would fire salvoes of missiles from the Gulf and are believed to have the ability to unleash nuclear weapons.

Israel’s Military Intelligence Chief Major-General Aviv Kochavi said in Tel Aviv this week he estimated that Iran could make four atomic bombs by further enriching uranium it had already stockpiled. And he felt that Iran could produce its first bomb within a year.
