Going from TN Status to family-based GC.

Under Application Type, I want "d. I am applying for an advance parole document to allow me to return to the United States after temporary foreign travel.", correct?

If so, in Part 3, it states "If you are applying for an Advance Parole Document, skip to Part 7". So I skip the rest of Part 3, as well as Part 4-6, and in part 7, it asks:

On a separate sheet of paper, explain how you qualify for an Advance Parole Document, and what circumstances warrant issuance of advance parole.

Does anyone have a good example of what they used for this?

I'm also worried about the instruction page saying:

Advance parole is an extraordinary measure used sparingly to bring and otherwise inadmissible alien to the United States for a temporary period of time due to a compelling emergency.

Is the I-131 not a pretty typical thing to be included in an AOS package?

Yes, you want "d" for the application type.

For the Part 7 supplement, I used the template here on VJ (http://www.visajourney.com/content/examples) and listed a couple trips that I could see myself taking (for my 90-something-year-old grandmother's birthday, for example), but from what I've seen here, a lot of people just write "unknown" and are still granted AP.

Yes, I-131 is routinely granted to all AOS applicants who request it, but admittance into the U.S. is at the discretion of the IO at the POE, and will be denied if there's an overstay.

I have a trip to Costa Rica in May and a friends wedding in August in Canada, so should be easy peazy. If they reject the I-131, it's not a huge deal as long as they accept the rest of the AOS package

Interesting. Can you link me to this advice? I'd like to know the reasoning behind it. Honestly, I'd think you'd be BETTER to have specific travel dates in mind, but perhaps that's not the case.

It really won't matter. If you have specific dates when you know you'll be traveling, put those down - if not, you don't have to come up with imagianry travel plans to get the AP. I think it is probably good to write down something in the field - "Unknown" seems to do the trick, or you can put something else roundabout such as "possible trips to native country", or "applying for AP in case of an unexpected emergency that requires me to travel". In any case, I have never seen an AP being denied for anyone if the forms were filed correctly. It is routinely approved, as was noted earlier in this thread.
