Hello All,

I need some advice and confirmation on how to file 2011 income tax.

I have done my own tax in the last several years using TurboTax.

This year is a bit more involve since I got married.

After some reading on this site, the following is my understanding.

I need some advice or confirmation from those that have used TurboTax to do their own tax.

Looks like the best option is to file Married Filing Jointly.

My wife does not have a SSN yet so I will have to submit a W-7 form.

My understanding is that I can submit the W-7 at the same time and along with my joint income tax.

Also, my understanding is that NRA can be written in the SSN field for her.

I understand that I will have to mail everything in (not electronically).

Would it be better to wait and get her SSN then file my income tax.

How long does it usually takes to get SSN?

Would getting the W-7 before getting her SSN create more problem later when we apply for her SSN?

Please advise.

As always, thank you all for your continued advice and support!

For tax year 2006, Rin and I filed using the ITIN. Had to mail in taxes to IRS along with the W-7. Both go together to a different address, they assign an ITIN, then forward it for processing of the 1040. Whole process took about 12 weeks from filing to return. The next year, we were filing AOS (Rin was a K-3, so we had two years to file AOS - waited until just before our second wedding anniversary so we would get a 10 yr green card), so we filed for an extension and filed taxes after she had her EAD and SSN. Return came much faster.

So in your case, when do you think your wife will receive her SSN? The ITIN process can add 10 weeks to the return, so if she will have her SSN in less time than that, I'd go the SSN route. Their was also a benefit the year Rin waited until she had her SSN as it was the year of Bush's tax rebate. However, had to have an SSN. A return using a ITIN received no rebate (for either person).

Go hear for more info on applying for a SSN.
