You should probably contact the embassy and ask them if they will extend it. Only they can give you the answer yes or no.

Contact the US Embassy about your immigration visa.

The US Embassy will unlikely extend your visa. If they can, they will cancel your current visa and issue you a new one with a later expiration date. It seems that your medical exam will expire on 7/5/2012, so you will need to take a new medical exam. You can expect to pay more fees for a new visa.

Here is some information from the US Consulate in Guangzhao; http://guangzhou.usembassy-china.org.cn/iv_faqs.html

11. What happens if I can’t travel within six months of when I receive my visa?

Immigrant and fiancé/e visas cannot be extended. If the visa is not used within its period of validity, you must bring it and the visa packet to our office for cancellation, along with a statement explaining the reasons why the visa was not used. It is possible that you will be eligible to receive a new visa, although this is not certain and depends on the circumstances of your case. Payment of an additional visa application fee may be required.

According to your timeline the Visa was issued today if am correct? if so then it will expired in July so you may still have a month after your exams to make it to the US and then once you get there the rest will follow , am just advising you based on the expiring date of the visa which is 6 months.

Sorry for my earlier post , I think you should travel to the US and then let your fiance start the adjustment procedure and then after that you can come back and write your exams while the AOS is in process. Since your exams is just a month, I think that will help. Starting over in case your visa got expired would be a total disaster though, so think everything through thoroughly before making the final decision.

The OP has a CR-1 immigration visa. AOS is not necessary. He can come to the US and leave right away with a I-551 stamp (temporary green card) in his passport. It's an expensive way to active his LPR status.

That is what I would do.

The way I see it you have 3 options.......Ask if you can take your exams early, enter the US and return to take your exams or ask the embassy if your visa can be re-issued.

Obviously having your exams rescheduled is the easiest and cheapest option. If that doesn't work, then it would come down to whether an extra flight to the US and back works out cheaper than the additional visa and/or medical fees you'd need to pay to have your CR-1 re-issued.

A visa is not always valid for 6 months. If something expires before (passport, or medical exam validity), then the visa is only valid until that date.

I don't know how the education system works in Ghana but in my country, the finals cannot be rescheduled. I guess entering the USA before the visa expires and then go back home to take your exams is the best option, although expensive.

An important point is also to know if your degree will be recognised in the US and if it will help you find a job. If not... well I think I wouldn't bother.

Thanks you all.I went to the consulat and they told me they can reissue another visa for me with no extra charge.

I have to give proof that i am a student,my exam time table, also update my medical and do a new police certificate.

The new visa will be expiring then on the expiring day of both new medical and police certificate.

And all this must be done before the current visa expired. This may also serve you...

A visa at hand is worth more than hundred in view. Pls recall all d stress u had to go thru to get the visa, recall that ur getting though based on proof was made possible by some good luck, recall the anxiety u had, d thought that u wld have been denied then ask urself to know if u are a hundred percent positive that a visa will be re issued to you. Who knows what might go wrong. U will never forgive urself if something goes wrong. In another breath, what's ur major in skl? Will ur degree earn u a living in d states. Is it recognised. Will ur subject area make u relevant and qualified to work in the states.

In your shoes, i will defer my admission and travel. See the US first then make up ur mind if it will benefit u coming back to finish. I will go to d states first and ask questions later. Mind u most african trained professionals adjust their compass to make ends meet. After all d end justifies the means.

just in case no one else mentioned it.

hey - take off from school soon, a one week break, vacation.

fly into the Usa, then return.

flying into the USA does 2 things for you :

1. you get a stamp in yer passport that validates the visa to be used as a temporary green card for one year, and

2. triggers the green card production , the card is sent to your spouse's address in the usa

IMO - if you do this, you can meet your calendar requirements with your exams. Plan to travel in June, back to USA, yes?

Good Luck!

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
