London 2012- K1s from NOA2 to interview thread

My fiance is trying to take a stab at the D-230 and we have 2 questions - I took a gander at this thread and didn't see either question answered yet.

1) On the every residence since he was 16 list - he has had consistent places to live the last 5-10 years or so, but the 10 before that he was more of a 'free spirit' and moved from couch to couch. How critical is London about the entire listing? (I suggested he just list the long term places and pass the others off as being under the 6 month mark, but he's very nervous about filling it in correctly and so has asked me to check in with my visa journey experts).

2) Military history - he was in the army for a year, and we have hunted but cannot figure out where to get his supporting documentation for the visa application. Is there a place to get military records from? And we are going back over 20 years, so before everything was electronic.

No need to apologize. It's confusing because there's several ways to do it which all get you to the embassy. And I'm not trying to talk anybody out of experimenting. I think it's a case of laying out things to consider, then you pick what seems most logical to you. I've experimented a bunch on my own journey and gone against the VJ posted "guides" and it worked out.

1) My experience says I can't recall that ever being a sticking point at the embassy. They don't check on it or discuss at the interview so to that I'd say don't sweat the small stuff. My logic would tell me give the most stable address or parent's address and don't leave any gaps in the timeline, even if it's not 100% accurate. My guess is they might be most interested in things that would indicate another country and thus an additional police certificate. Also, this is a worldwide form and sometimes police certificates might have to be from each local station where one has lived. ACRO just organized the one report covers the whole country in 2008ish. I know when I started, there was a pinned thread warning people to go through ACRO/ACPO to get the "new" police certificate. Many people got delayed because of getting one locally.

For DS230 question 32 it says list all employment for the last 10 years.....I am 26 so I did literally a ton of jobs when I was a teenager and in school/uni part time. I can't even remember some of them let alone the dates?

Also for question 33 list all educational institutes. do I lost my primary, secondary school, college? I did one year at a Uni then dropped out before going elsewhere do I put that down and what do it put for diploma??

Does the information on this form end up in background checks when you move to the United States?

If you call your local tax office, they can give you an employment history. They can't give specific dates but they can tell you what tax year the job came under.

For 33 I have listed every single school I've ever been to, right down to infants. I'm not sure if I should be putting degree / diploma either as I left university as well. I 'think' you need to put what you were studying for since the form isn't asking if you achieved it, just if it was a degree or diploma but I'll await further advice on that.

If you got a degree, name it....like mine is B.S. Education. If your uni study did not result in a degree, then N/A goes there because you didn't get a degree. Also you have to think about the form is written by Americans. Maybe some worldwide educational systems don't exactly fit the boxes so do the best you can. For my high school, I would put H.S. Diploma or Graduated. How does a person in the UK indicate they finished all the requirements vs dropped out? Use a word or several to indicate you completed it. Sorry, i don't know the UK lingo.

If you're asking can a potential employer access what you write on an immigration form? No way. We have privacy laws and USCIS isn't going to make their databases open to the public sector.

Employers will see what you write on their employment application or provide on your resume. If they want to verify your degree, they can ask you to provide a university transcript. As far as background checks by employers, I get a sense that they won't check anything UK. I've read threads about jobs and it seems that large employers sometime subscribe to background checking services. They use your name,date of birth, US driver's license (or social security number maybe??) to see if you have any "hits" like arrests. Normally they aren't anything worldwide. I've read several times people couldn't be hired because the "security checker" agency reported back that the SSN was too new to run a check. Some national chains are inflexible until you have a SSN or maybe DL 6 months and can have a report from the agency. Offers to show foreign police certificates didn't seem to help with the more rigid large employers.

Not every employer will have background check requirements. Employers can't ask the FBI for your rap sheet. Only you can authorize that. If the employment requires a high level of security or license, then you may be asked to authorize an FBI fingerprint check. I had to do that just to fill in occasionally at my financial advisor's office. It's a requirement for any employee of businesses that trade securities on the markets like stock brokers, etc. It's the first time I was ever fingerprinted for a job and I've taught school, worked for the State Legislature, and for a chemical company that usually is reported as #2 worldwide on most lists.

So I'm no expert on this but just threw out some of what I've read. In general I think it's not going to be as detailed as you fear unless you are trying to get a federal job with the government. And you won't be eligible for that probably until you are a citizen.

You need to contact your local tax office

Call the number listed, they will direct you to your local tax office and give you the number or transfer you (probably the latter)

Remember the list does not give dates, only the tax year the employment fell. Up to you to give the rest.

Information regarding call the operator assisted visa line

I have just called the line myself, and overall this was a fairly quick, yet thorough procedure. The call itself took just over 8 minutes. I had a second enquiry which pushed the call to 12 minutes. My advisor was extremely thorough (And yes that probably added two minutes, I don't care, I know it's right)

If your name is spelt incorrectly you must call the operator assisted visa information line. I had to do this, and only these guys can do it.

Just a few points

The automated message at the start advises of five options. For I-130 filers, you press option 1. K visa applications press option 4. (This may change but could save you an extra few seconds)

If you are calling from within the UK, you CAN if you choose use Skype for the call. This costs more than the BT landline, however it DOES allow you to keep the billing to yourself.

You MUST have your passport number and it would be helpful to have your London case number.

Additionally the line cannot take or accept Visa Electron cards

If in doubt. Ask!

If you have additional questions the advisor will be able to assist you. In my case, my name was spelt incorrectly on my forms. (Only missing a single character)

There is an email address for the London Consular office which they will provide you with however, they will also provide you with a reference number relating to the query you have.

This reference number is valid for one week only and according to them, emails will only be answered if they contain this reference number in the subject field

Oh and just to add...

The fee is non refundable, non transferable and is valid for 12 months. Only the cardholder can pay.

Dave had his interview yesterday...the consular officer didn't have issue with his not having the court papers, but he had to deny the visa application b/c Dave had the 2 offenses 27 yrs ago. He told Dave about the waiver program/ form I-601. A setback but we're gonna do what we need to do now. Any advice is welcome.
