Return ticket for tourist visa interview?

I have heard that it's a good idea to have your plane tickets at the interview, but why? It doesn't prove anything; as most of you know, buying round trip can even be cheaper. Secondly, I like to use cheapoair.com and the like, and they don't do refunds. Do they really expect you to spend $1000+ before you know if you can actually use the tickets?

Where did you read you were supposed to have return tickets at the interview? I think they mean you should have a return ticket when you enter the US. No one would expect you to buy a ticket to use a visa you don't have yet.

in case you don't get your visa, you will lose the money. So, that means, sorrow and lost.!
