Hello everyone,

First of all I would like to thank everyone for all the helpful information. I have been reading here for a while and this is my first post.

I have a quick question. I am currently trying to get my papers together to apply for the I-130 for my wife. I was married previously and had a divorce overseas 3 years ago. For the part relating to the certified copy of the divorce document, what does that specifically mean? my divorce documents are in arabic and the courts there dont have the fancy raised seal that the courts have here. So should I just make a copy of it and have it notarized? thanks everyone for your help

Specifically, The Divorce Documentation will show you are Free to Marry as you know.

I Highly Suspect those Documents will need to be Translated in English to USCIS and I believe a Notary wont help if Not Translated.

A Copy of the Divorce will be required and a NEW SEAL Dated/Stamped/Signed is what I believe is Required. IN INK.

I maybe wrong but this is Normal for the REQUIRED Divorce Documentation to submit with any Petition.

I may stand Corrected but I think this what you need.

You will probably get a better answer if you post in the country specific forum. Divorce certificates vary throughout the world. For example this question was raised in the UK forum and a lot of incorrect advice was given by non-English people based on their own country's certificates.

If you post in the country forum for the country where your divorce certificate was issued you'll likely to get someone who has been through the same process to help.

Well, here's the thing.

(or a collection of things)

1. yer to submit a photocopy of the divorce decree.

2. the 'thing' you have - is official, yes? It's a certified copy or the original document - there's stamps and/or seals, with signatures of you and yer ex plus a few court officials, yes?

3. The divorce decree must be translated into English. It doesn't matter who does it - but the translated document MUST have a translator's attestation written in to the last page or a new page of the translated document. A PHOTOCOPY of this is what you submit - not the original.

4. Originals are shown on interview day, at the Immigrant Visa Unit where yer spouse will be interviewed. Photocopies (only) are to be submitted with the I-130.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Thanks for your help. well, I have the original certificate from the court overseas and it is official and has all the seals. But, what do I do about the copy that the USCIS is asking for? can I translate the document and attach a notarized copy of the original? Thanks again

You only need a regular photocopy of the original (not a notarized copy of the original)

and

a photocopy of the translated document with the translator's attestation (a photocopy of that is fine)

please forget any 'notarized copy requirement' at this phase, yes?

My apologies for not being clearer, earlier .
