Hey guys and gals! My EAD is on it's way at last we're sooo happy!! I was just wondering how it all works, with my EAD do I get a social security number?? And how long do I use it for I'm assuming it lasts until I get my green card approved and produced and then I could use that?? EAD is valid until you get your green card.

You take your EAD and go apply for an SSN at the SSOffice.

As a K-1 you could have gotten your SSN 2 weeks after entry and saved some waiting time there.

When you have your SSN you can look for jobs.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

Nope - you need work authorization to use the SSN to work. You don't need it to get the SSN. K-1 entrants are entitled to get an SSN and use it for getting medical insurance / DL / be put on joint bank accounts etc.

Most of the time the social security people just have no clue, especially when it comes to immigration-related issues. You're better off doing your own research first, then going to them to get what you need.

Small correction - there MUST be at least 2 weeks of validity on the I-94 to get the SSN. If there isn't they're not eligible anymore based on the K1 and need to wait for the EAD or GC

Congrats!

I ran into something similar at our local SS office. It was hell. The supervisor, even when I was polite and pointed out forms from their website showing that a K1 was eligible was not only rude and harsh, but even looked my (now) husband in the eye and said, "You're working here illegally, aren't you? That's why you need the SSN. You don't want to get caught." She also said that we don't need a SSN for things like bank accounts, drivers' licenses, or starting school: all lies.

The ss office one town over? No problem. We were in and out in 20 minutes, social came in the mail two weeks later.

I still get worked up thinking about that first office. My husband had been in the US not even 20 days and some witch was accusing him of breaking the law in such a rude, condescending manner it made my blood boil.

You should report her. And tell her how you were treated much better in the second office you went to.

That's horrible, the guy I spoke to seems polite and understanding, just apparently not very knowledgeable.

I figured out I'd have to wait for the EAD the seconds I posted about the k-1 you're right it's not valid. I'll wait though, I have alot of practice at that.
