Hello VJ friends,

I am still waiting for the visa approval for my husband who is in India. His passport is expiring soon in Sep 2012. I think when he goes for the interview, his passport should be valid for atleast 6 months. He is planning to renew it now.

Which passport office does he need to apply for renewal?

1. The passport office in Chennai (original passport was issued 10 years ago)

2. The passport office near his current residence (he lives in Pune)

I heard that when the police checks for verification before issuing the passport, the passport applicant must be present. Is that true?

Please help.

Wherever his residence is, if he has changed his address to Pune then he should apply at Pune. Yes police does go to home to verify the address and the person.

Thanks for your reply.

His current passport has Chennai address. He changed his residence in Pune several times. Does he need to put the Pune address or keep the Chennai address to renew the passport?

If you apply for renewal in the US.. they just put whatever address you want in ur indian passport. Also they would not need verification for address in

india and they only check for validity of your visa status in the US.

Given the fact that you are going to apply for an immigrant visa in future, you would need a passport police certificate. You definitely wont be

able to get a police certificate immediately if you apply for renewal outside India. The whole process will take a month or so in big cities and

longer in rural areas.

The police data would be not available if passport was renewed in the US. In order to get PCC for the immigrant visa, you would need

valid police data. For which a policeman will come to your home and verify the existence of your husband via ration card, voters ID etc...

So If you apply for renewal in US, the PCC will take over a month in big cities. This is the cost.

If your husband has ration card, voters id etc... in Chennai and can have someone verify his existence at that address via 2 references. You can keep your

address in chennai, if may be his parents or family still lives there and renew the passport in chennai.

Or else you have to change all the forms of id and documentation to pune and then apply for renewal. This can take little time.

I recently got my PCC from Chennai and renewed my passport in SFO. It was a little pain...luckily I had the identification. Still the process was time consuming.

So my suggestion would be since you have lot of time before immigrant visa interview change all documentation to pune

and apply for it in Pune.PCC will be easier to get as well.

It shouldn't be pain when we have Passport Seva Kendra in Chennai. Yes, getting appointment is indeed big pain! Crazy website!

For my case, got PCC within same day, and re-issued the passport with added spouse name & new address under Tatkaal, so got it within 3 days in my hand.
