Husband just picked up the birth certificate of our 3 weeks old baby today. Now we want to apply for her SS card also this week, wondering if what is all the requirements ? And does our baby need to be present there or what ?

Was your baby born in the US? Most US hospitals will help the parents apply for a SSN when the child is born. Check your hospital paperwork before you go requesting a second SSN for the child.

you can down load the form ss-5 you can mail it or go to the social security office in your area, bring all your babys medical ,birthcertificate,your ID'S,us citizenship all documents must be originals,congratulations on your new baby.

If she was born in the US I thought this was all done prior to being discharge from the hospital. Well that's how I remember it when my son was born. Unless it has changed..

Call the hospital and ask them if a SSN was requested for your child. Also, ask them what is their practice in helping obtain SSN for newborns. You might be pleasantly surprised that a SSN has already been requested for your child.

Having two different SSN can complicate things for your child. So make sure that the child does not have an active request for a SSN before you make a request at the SSA office.
