To summarize this thread:

Government creates program to help people that has helped make generations of Americans dependent on the selfsame government, then.....

a percentage of people take advantage of the program in a fraudulent way, another percentage are permanent wards of the state, and yet another percentage are encouraged to breed far beyond their individual ability to support a family, and virtually all see it as a permament entitlement, so....

lets just cancel the program all together. Or maybe we could make it a bare-bones emergency program- minimalist and temporary.

This has been an example of VJ logic.

Logic seems quite sound to me.

The problem is not that people are taking advantage of the system.

The problem is there's a system!

I only know one person on food stamps. She's a single mom who was married for a very long time until her husband cheated and left her for another woman. She was a stay at home mom and never went to college. She has 3 kids and her ex has skipped out on child support. All of her family live on the other side of the country so she doesn't really have anyone who can help with the kids or anything. She lives in a tiny one bedroom house. Her kids (all seem very happy, smart, and well adjusted) share a bed in the one bedroom and she sleeps on the couch. She is in school and works two jobs. She is always positive, optimistic, and I've never once heard her complain about her situation or feel sorry for herself. After knowing her for a few years I get the impression that she couldn't feed her kids and pay the bills without the extra help.

Here's the rub...

Without all of the socialist welfare programs business & personal taxes would be less. I bet wages would be better and she'd have better chance to support herself and her kids.

Seriously Kudos to her for keeping it together. In my opinion if the ex won't help support his kids then he should be incarcerated and put to work (yes I believe prisoners should have to work for their room & board) with any minimal wages he gets being sent directly to her until he can either arrange to get caught up on support or all of the kids are 18.

Do you have a job? If you do, you better be happy your employer has a wide profit margin.

She is the kind of person welfare should exist for...but on a very temporary basis. What pisses some people off is the generational welfare and benefits going to otherwise able bodied folks, the issue ia laziness.

And just as Bob stated, if we had less government and the government took its foot off of the brakes of the economy, there would be more jobs than could be filled. That would mean less control for the busy-bodies in DC and government at the state level, and they certainly can not have that.

Nothing good about food stamps when the leeches come across the borders and suck up the free government funds dry and complain about not enough more free stuff. The illegals are a huge problem goverment wise up and cut the illegals off maybe the USA wont be so broke from supporting these jerk who pop out kids every day and the pregnant still complain they have free drivers licenses what more can they get.

Is bank robber a job? Don't worry FDIC has you covered. Your government at work.

A bank robber? Not from a guy that doesn't like guns.

A necessary "lifeline" for 46 million Americans? Riiiiiiight.

Thanks for bringing sanity back to the discussion, Mark. In America, NO ONE needs to starve.

2/3 are OBESE, so they need to cutback on that food, anyways.

America wastes TONS OF FOOD everyday. No need for Mr. Ghetto EBT cards!

Welfare is a lifeline for political constituents!

30 to 50 percent of American food produced is going to a landfill.

The problem is the people who abuse the system. As they say, one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel (I know there's more than one rotten apple!). I, like Amby, know people who get food stamps but also work. It's mostly because their income alone isn't enough to suffice feeding themselves and their children and paying the bills. I see more and more cases of husbands/fathers running off and leaving the woman to fend for herself and kids around here. It's a sad trend.

Then there's those people who abuse it. I've always wondered how the heck they were able to get away with that. No one ever checks up on these people!
