In 3 weeks my husband will be arriving in the US for the first time on a CR1 visa. He is interested in us planning a vacation to Europe in the near future. Is it possible for him to travel internationally or only back to his home country?

He can travel internationally. He may require a visa, though, as he isn't a USC. Check the requirements based on where you are going and his country of origin.

Waiting for Issuance of Visa.........

Posted (edited)

Definitely check into the requirements for whatever country you plan to visit as has been mentioned. I wanted to go to Paris this spring until I did some research and found he needs a visa. Since I just got through with a visa process, I'm surely not interested in starting another one so soon. So I'm going to hold off on that trip. Not only that, the problem I have with that visa process is you have to book your flight and hotel in advance to present as proof and that still doesn't mean the visa will be approved. They also want proof of income and bank statements and all types of other things, which he doesn't have right now.

Oh Man!!!!! Sounds like THIS TRIP isn't going to happen for a long time! I am not going through any visa anything again for a long while. I know that the process isn't as intense when getting a travel visa to those countries...I've had to get them for my boss and its much more simple. Still a headache, but nothing like this one has been. Nonetheless, I don't feel comfortable paying a hotel in advance when the visa approval is pending.

Thanks so much for this info

Good luck. Being a permanent resident in the US will probably work in your spouse's favor in terms of getting a travel visa to Europe, so it may not be as difficult as you anticipate. :)

LOL tell me about it! As ceadsearc said, I figured being a PR would make it easier and less likely to be denied, but I’m still not interested in all the paperwork involved or what needs to be done the day of the interview. I’m over anything to do with a visa or the process for right now. So unless it’s to DR, we will not be traveling outside of the US until next year. I was highly upset too, because I was super excited that I finally had a travel buddy and I was looking forward to taking that trip. But that visa requirement ruined my mood and I looked at my husband with the stank eye and told him it was his fault we couldn’t go and now I have to plan a different trip. Poor guy didn’t know what to say. I’m glad that I did check into it this time because I was ready to book our flights. I didn’t do my homework when we went to Jamaica and they wanted to put him on the very next plane back to the US. We were with customs for at least an hour before they finally decided I could pay them $20 and they’d let us go.

You said your husband wants to go to Disney World, so that would be really nice if you guys did that. I can’t wait to go there with my husband! Any place you choose will be enjoyable since you’ll be together. And on top of that he’s doing/seeing some of this stuff for the very first time. That’s what I love about going places and doing things with my husband…he’s only ever seen it on TV or in movies. It’s his first experience and I get to see his reaction. For this trip I’ve settled on a Vegas/San Diego/Los Angeles. So it looks like the only Paris I’ll be seeing for now is the hotel in Vegas :(

Girllll, he wants to go everywhere!!!! thats all I hear is I want, want, want....lol But he is really psyched about going to Disney...so that's definitely in the very near future plan. I'd take Vegas any day!!! Paris will be there.....gives you more time to save money ;)

Waiting for Issuance of Visa.........

Posted (edited)

Dominicans need a Schengen VISA to visit the European countries like Spain, France, Italy, etc. I booked 2 tickets last summer to Spain and I had to cancel because I "assumed" my wife's U.S. Green Card was enough. WRONG! So I lost half my money because I had to cancel. Please do your research before you purchase any ticket. Check the links below for more info:
