Okay, so here is my issue.

After a somewhat hard time I got my SS# card about 5/6 weeks ago and around 3 weeks ago, went back to SS to have the name changed on it to my new married surname. The lady took all of my details/documents and kept my SS# Card.

This morning, I received a call from the SS Office telling me that I am "out of status" re; my I-94 (my k1 lasted 90 days until December 25th) even though I had already been issued a SS# Card and was married well within the 90 days.....what is the problem here? I only wish to change my surname on the SS# Card!?

Not to mention I wasted 6 weeks waiting for the issue of the 1st SS# Card because the office didnt inform me that there was a problem unitl I actually went back to the office myself to find out why it hadnt been mailed out yet!!!

She said I have to visit immigration and have my "status updated", how and where do I do this? (I'm in Staten Island, NYC)

Thankyou for any help

I don't understand either unless you are talking to some one who does not understand what is going on. Of course your I94 is expired. But you are married and there should not be a problem in getting your name changed. Once my wife was married to me, we went back to the SS office, showed them our marriage certificate and that was it.

You could also wait until you receive your EAD or AOS (greencard) when your status is updated before returning to the SS office.

SSN for Noncitizens

I went back to the office this morning and got absolutly nowhere SO annoying. I'm thinking about just waiting until i recevie my AOS update documents, but im not sure what the average wait time is ....? I only applied a month or so ago.

Thankyou

Listen,

you will NEVER have to show your SS card to anybody as long as you live. I haven't shown mine to anybody in over 20 years. All that matters is that you have a SSN, and that you'll need all the time. So don't worry too much about the cardboard card, as you don't need it. You can't work without an EAD or Green Card anyway, so what difference does it make if you have the card in your drawyer or not? Imprint your SSN into your brain, and that's all you'll ever need.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
