It is possible to know the truth, and still be impressed by our Founding Fathers. What a bunch of idiots!

+1

A reading of American History and the Founding Fathers will show that they were, indeed, tremendous men accomplishing tremendous feats while starting this nation.

However, American history is also clear that one, if not the only, subject that the Founding Fathers refused to face was the issue of slavery in the fledgling USA. The topic was so divisive that it threatened to forever prevent the 'Union' of states from forming, thus the Founding Fathers never took on the subject, purposefully avoided it, in order to be able to successfully start the USA. Its a shame it had to be that way but if I were in their shoes I don't know if I could have found a way to end slavery, and start the nation, at the same time. In retrospect, I've always suspected that the Founding Fathers would now state that they should have tackled the issue of slavery because their purposeful decision not to address the issue led to the actions of the Civil War...a terrible outcome.

Blessings to the Thread,

Slavery, the subject at hand here. Not just Black slavery.

Working conditions that allowed children as young as six to work 18+ hour days, beaten with iron rods when deemed to be slacking. Children mangled by machinery thrown into the street and left to die of their injuries, without any sort of medical assistance, being replaced by the next child victim.

Irish worked to death under appalling conditions, often treated as even less valuable than their Black counterparts. Ditto Chinese.

Entire Tribes murdered, down to the last man, woman and child. Native womens breasts cut off and tossed around like toy balls just for fun. Smallpox laced blankets, deliberate destruction of vast herds of buffalo, "permanent" treaties which only lasted until the next concessions were demanded, to name just a few Native American tidbits. Nah! One more, google Indian Schools and assimilation.

Much of the worst Danno, was in the name and spirit of Christian thinking in their respective times by the by. Manifest Destiny ring a bell?

So sorry Danno, while there is much to be proud of, the historical record features more than just a few ugly truths. I personally think we are much closer now to the spirit of words in our Founding Fathers documents now than we clearly were when they were written. And while at times and places US history proves dark and harsh, over all we can still be proud of our Nation and those who built it.

One too many 'now' in that last paragraph! Oops!

Danno is getting wood just reading this. Oh the good ole' days.

Context is everything my friend. I asked "What made our early years "especially dark"? you simply rattled off the typical conditions in most of the world.

Compared to most people around the world at the time, we treated the Indian pretty good, even making agreements rather than just taking outright and then either killing or enslaving them.

So yes when you compare yesterdays standards by today.... you can easily vilify those in that earlier period and thats really my only concern.

That kids will get an unbalanced view of history... as I did. For instance, Indians commonly took and bargained with Slaves.... why are they held to any lesser scorn than Europeans?

How well do you think slaves in Africa were treated? From accounts I've read, to be a slave in America would be much more preferable.

In fact I suggest you read slave narratives which were recorded by Govt grant, their words are closer to what I call history than all these textbook manufacturers produce.

Start with "We lived in a cabin in the yard" then read the rest of them. It is eye opening in a number of ways.

As for your attempt at bashing Christians,,,,, you really show your lack of basic knowledge on the subject of Slave liberation.

Without the Movement from Christians, slavery would have when on for who knows how long. We see where Atheism reigned in this last century (under Communism) slavery had a big rebirth, The Gulagsa, work camps and re-education centers where nothing more than slavery.

Nearly the whole abolistioist movement was made up of Christians, perhaps you've heard of John Brown?

<<<<One of the first protests against the enslavement of Africans came from German and Dutch Quakers in Pennsylvania in 1688. >>>> Wiki

I guess in a nation in which nearly everyone identified themselves as "Christian" you can rightfully blame every good thing or bad thing that happens on Christianity but I don't think the fair minded persons would conclude The Bible tells it's followers to hand out infected Blankets. Get real man.

People compelled by their faith has been the Juice behind nearly every social advancement during the time you spoke of.

Danno, Danno, Danno... I am not vilifying, nor did I vilify our Founders.

You want to rewrite history, omit facts, and apparently find said facts shameful. History should not be changed to fit your esoteric and whimsical fairytail view.

Do you deny salvation to white Southern slave owners? Were they not good Christians? Or do we make more of the efforts of Christian abolitionists by writing white Christian slave owners out of the record but keeping Christian abolitionists in?

You have to break some eggs to make real mayonnaise. You don't achieve world domination through fair play and hard work. You have take what you want. That's what made this country great.

Slavery helped to make this country strong. If the colonists were not ready to masacre the indians this country would still consist of the thirteen original colonies. Mexico didn't give up half of it's

land because the US asked nicely.

Are you somehow thinking Whites were the only slave holders in America, I believe the very first slave holder was black. Indians enjoyed slaves as well.

I only mention it because you went on about "Omiting facts" in history.

I didn't write a history book in any of my posts. Danno-logic might thrill your wife, but in this thread yourself and Slim "Ain't no water in my powder!" are the only two supporting omissions of historical fact.

Show me my post where I said Whites were the only slave owners.

Slavery, as taught in America is a racial issue.

What I'v advocating here is teaching the whole story or not teaching it at all.
