They could depending on how often you leave, how long you go for and the nature of your trips.

6 months is meaningless, it's all about the proof. Before 6 months the IO has to prove you broke continuous residency, after you have to prove that you didn't. That's all the 6 months things mean.

People have been out a lot longer and been fine and others have been away shorter and had their Green Cards revoked. It all depends on what exactly you are doing outside the country and how you maintain all your US residency and ties while you are gone...
