Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) -- A new poll released as South Carolinians are voting in their Republican primary shows Newt Gingrich's week-long surge taking him past Mitt Romney into a substantial lead among likely voters in the Palmetto State.

The American Research Group poll, conducted Thursday and Friday, shows Gingrich leading Romney by a 40%-26% margin. ARG's last poll, released Thursday, showed a virtual tie with Gingrich at 33% and Romney at 32%.

Two weeks ago, Romney's campaign was looking at two wins under its belt, a big lead in South Carolina, a bigger lead in Florida and the possibility of a clear path to the Republican presidential nomination.

Oh, and RP is coming in just behind Santorum. 4th place ain't bad. Except, there are only 4 candidates left.

Mitt's in trouble. Newt's 10 points ahead of him. He better hope Newt blows himself up soon. We know The Newt will eventually do just that but it might too late for Mitt. Oh well, good for Obama then.

The primary is still young. A victory in SC and Florida would have meant that it's pretty much over but losing SC doesn't mean Romney is out. Newt will implode.

I wouldn't exactly call it a collapse, but it will leave a dent. I'm curious about his damage control strategy, will he go after Newt with all guns blazing now.

Mitt was on top in SC, 14 points ahead of The Newt at the beginning of the week. This week. The week of the primary. He lost 12 points behind The Newt yesterday - the end of the week. That's a 26 point downward swing within less than 7 days. If that ain't a collapse, then I don't know what is.
