The situation -

Fixed Term Contract that is likely to get extended

Do I actually need to put any more in here? Work know about the engagement, but she's coming to the UK as far as they are concerned. Oops :innocent:

I did the same. Told my work last week (after getting my visa approved), fortunately I'm out of any probation period and therefore was able to give them more than the minimum 4 weeks safe in the knowledge they can't actually turn it on me and give me 4 weeks notice without going to lengthy procedures.

In short, they know even though I'm not leaving until the end of February, and its a bit weight of my shoulders being able to talk freely about it.

I told my employers after he visited at Christmas and gave me my engagement ring. They also know I have applied for a Visa. I work for the Civil service. Contrary to what I thought would happen everyone (my managers included) have been nothing but really excited for me and expressed how much they would do the same in my situation. I've told my manager about the 2 trips to London I'll need to make and why and she's been pretty understanding that it might mean granting me leave at short notice so I can travel.

I agonised over telling them, but decided in the end I didn't really want to hide my joy or take my ring off to go to work and being the civil service you can't just set my contract on fire and kick me out the door, so I'm lucky in that respect

All my managers actually TOLD me to apply for the recent promotion exercise, just in case my visa suffers any delays. So I've also done that and seen as it's decided outside my office, I might actually get it

I too am in the civil, but I'm a contractor unlike a full time employee so they can stop employing me at the drop of a hat. Gah, I am SO jealous of you

I've been with them for almost 6 years, in the same office, which has made the decision to tell them so much easier

I'm very lucky, its a tough decision and hard to hide your excitement over what you're going through right now

You're right at the beginning of your journey. I told them after the NOA2

Read Civil as Public Body in Wales (yes I am really deliberately being vague in fear of loosing my job)

Yes, probably best to tell them after I get NOA2... The debts aren't the issue (They're gone) it's the saving of money, plus given I'm faced with a good few moths without work, I am absolutely not wanting to give up a moment too soon here either1

Yeh if your fixed term its always a bit more risky isn't it! Im fixed term but found out few weeks ago that weve been given another year so im secure until march 2013 which is why im a bit more vocal about the visa stuff and my plans to leave now.

My colleagues are sooo excited for me they ask for the latest news all the time, im lucky my boss is a little clueless when it comes to visas etc so she has no idea what timeframe its likely to be. But i have to say theyve been good to me lately, my partners in the american army and deployed , they only told him yesterday his dates for his r and r and they have let me have two weeks annual leave short notice because id kept them in the loop about the circumstances!

I think you have to do whats right for you, its not selfish to be looking after your own interests and finances!
