I was under the impression that all vodkas are potato-based.. no?

(Tried to look it up in wikipedia, but I can't till tomorrow)

If you before the page fully loads you stop loading or press ESC (same thing), you get the required page.star_smile.gif

I gleaned this by using the above method:

Vodka may be distilled from any starch/sugar-rich plant matter; most vodka today is produced from grains such as sorghum, corn, rye orwheat. Among grain vodkas, rye and wheat vodkas are generally considered superior. Some vodkas are made from potatoes, molasses, soybeans, grapes, rice, sugar beets and sometimes even byproducts of oil refining or wood pulp processing. In some Central European countries like Poland some vodka is produced by just fermenting a solution of crystal sugar and yeast. In the European Union there are talks about the standardization of vodka, and the Vodka Belt countries insist that only spirits produced from grains, potato and sugar beet molasses be allowed to be branded as "vodka", following the traditional methods of production.

Ugh. Can't stand Smirnoff, even as a mixer.

Give Svedka a try sometime, you'll never want to touch Gray Goose again. :D

Smirnoff is pretty horible. I've tried Svedka, and didn't like it really. As to Grey Goose, I think that is really overpriced, especially for how it tastes. I would rather drink Ketel One for that amount. If you are willing to spend a bit, Stoli Elit is phenomenal. But, it will run you $60-80 per bottle.

ah I see, thanks for helping out a vodka noob

Yeah, the best vodkas are made with wheat. Potato-based are getting hard to come by in the US these days, outside of regional local distillers. I've had some good ones in Russia, but about half the time I get headaches, not sure why. Never get headaches with the wheat-based vodkas though.

Another Ukraine vodka is Nemiroff and it is pretty good, but good luck in finding it here in the states. They are notorious for not being able to keep up with demand.

Any suggestions to obtain it in the U.S.? I've heard the name, but never been able to find it.

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Kirkland Signature (Costco brand) is the way to go!! Combination of smoothness and economy - even if you disregard the rumor that it is actually Grey Goose repackaged it's a great vodka and a great value.

Of course during the college days we all went with SKYY.. glad those days are over. I also concur that Smirnoff is awful :-)

Since I'm here...

Thoughts on good vodka? For some time I've been under the (mis-)impression that Gray Goose is about the finest vodka you can buy at a reasonable price point. I recently tried Svedka , and I'm ready to pour the rest of my Gray Goose down the drain. VERY smooth, great taste, and you can get a giant bottle of it at Costco for a very reasonable price.

Other favorite vodkas?

I love svedka too and it cheaper :)

The Svedka chick is hot. After a few drinks I'd get some man on animated robot action going.

I'm not much on foo-foo drinks so I go with Kamchatka from our local Kroger. It's only about $6 for the big bottle and once it's mixed up with whatever you mix it up with, it tastes the same as the high priced stuff.

My wife's been on a Tito's kick lately. Her and her girls put down a few gallons over the last month. They say it's pretty good. Seems alright to me. Pretty smooth but not as good as my Kamchatka!

I was under the impression that all vodkas are potato-based.. no?

According to Sean Combs, ballas don't drink potatoes. Ballas drink grapes. And that's why he made Ciroc.

Nemiroff is decent stuff when you're looking for all the flavors.

Any suggestions to obtain it in the U.S.? I've heard the name, but never been able to find it.

There's a Russian grocery store online (I forget the name of it) but they'll ship it to you. There's a link to it somewhere here in the RUB forum.

Coke with vanilla vodka tastes like spiked Dr. Pepper.

Regular vodka with vanilla coke tastes the same! - And saves you a few bucks.

Already mentioned, but I'll throw in for 42 Below and Level, both are very smooth.
