Driving Licence

Ok, so we're months away but (like always) we wanted to find out what I needed to do when I got to the USA to get things like a driving licence.

Unfortunately, the Texas department of public safety has about as much customer service as a wet fish.

So, here's the deal. After arriving in the USA, I'll be applying for an SSN after about 10 days. However, the guy on the phone (he mumbled a lot and was very vague) told us that I need a green card in order to apply for a driving licence. Given I'm entering under a K1 this would mean that it could take about 6 months for me to get that, and as I would be living in the USA, I'm led to believe I will only legally be able to drive in Texas for 60 days before having to get a Texas Driving licence,

Yet, something about the I-94 and what I'll have to declare it as (since, apparently it's a working visa) tells me that I might be able to get a driving licence with this and not a green card.

Of course, the guy seemed about as interested as dog getting it's glands expressed. So any advice, would be REALLY appreciated.

Thanks!

http://www.txdps.sta...lStatusDLID.htm Hope this link helps, I advise you wait at least 14 days before applying SS so DHS has time to put your name in the registry.

You do not need a green card however they will only issue a temporary or conditional license till you get the green card. It is good for 6 to 12 months.

Nope,. I spoke to soon. EVERYTHING is conflicting.

It now appears that I can only drive for 30 days legally in Texas before getting a licence, meaning that It's very likely my SSN won't arrive in time, however this isn't so bad because I don't necessarily need a SSN to get a driving licence.

Unfortunately the chart linked to above, shows that I'd get a temporary licence valid for the remaining time on the I-94, which more, tells me that after 90 days, I won't be able to drive unless I lie.

Other sites around the web, advocate that the NOA1 (I-797) from the AOS application provides evidence enough to show that I will become a lawfully permanent resident, and can get a licence for one year.

The chart above conflicts this. Since, an AOS application is not an adjustment to a particular visa as far as I can see.

Other sites conflict with this again.

As far as I can see now, unless I get the EAD, I will essentially be stuck, in a house, waiting..... oh boy. (The DPS are still about as useful as a bag of wet fish)

Any help is appreciated, I'm afraid I've attempted to assimilate so much information now, that the simplest things are even confusing the hell out of me. If you know exactly what I'm on about, please let me know in really plain english with sock puppets, because I'm stuck. Thank you

Ok never mind, I just found the bit on the form that says this

Applicants for adjustment of status

Note: These are individuals applying to become

lawful permanent residents.

YES

♦ Immigration documentation indicating this status.

This documentation can include, but is not limited to a form I-

797 indicating a pending I-485 or pending application for

adjustment of status.

RIGHT! So, moving on slightly,

Who has been through this?

Plan now

Arrive, wait 14 days, apply for SSN, apply for marriage licence, wait 72 hours, get married, apply for marriage certificate, upon receipt, file for AOS, upon receipt of NOA1 go and get licence.... I hope to god that's correct

SS is a must have for the DL, we just went through all that. Have you considered obtainning an international license in the UK?

I have an IDP from here, but I'm told it's not recognised, if an SSN is required then that should be alright considering after 14 days I'll do it, and whenever it arrives (i'm told it's fairly quick) I can file for AOS, I wouldn't be able to go for a drivers licence anyway until I get the NOA1

I don't see why the IDP would help if I'm living in the state and they state that I cannot drive for more than 30 days without a Texas licence
