So he could apply for a temporary temporary card to work here when he lands? Like a temporary EAD? and it costs more money? Why charge so much money for the visa application, money for the EAD, money to adjust the status, and he had to go to a "special" doctor at the US embassy because they don't trust French doctors? It's frustrating, when I found out that in France it doesn't cost anything except to translate some documents into French. Sorry to go off topic here :ot2: I should have been more sensible :bonk:

Technically, he can apply for a temporary EAD when he lands, but most people agree it is useless. People mention it here just to be thorough, but I think it just makes it more confusing for something you won't want to do. The deal is you can apply for a EAD when he lands. It costs $340 or something. It will expire 90 days after he enters, and it will take about 90 days to get approved. In other words, you'd pay for a temporary thing that he will have for a few days at best. So while this exists, most people agree it is a waste of money. When you file for an EAD with the AOS packet, it is free, it lasts a year, etc.

It's not as bad as you think, really :) Have some honeymoon time, let him figure out how to get around, and he'll have his EAD in no time. Best of luck.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

He could apply right away. But it would be pretty much pointless as it costs money and takes about 90 days for approval and is only valid until the I-94 expires. So it would only be good a few days.

The quickest way to get him working is to marry and file immediately after entry. Include the EAD application (free with the AOS filing) and he will be able to work in a couple months.

It's hard to know what the best way until things are done a lot of the time. You know what they say ... hindsight is 20/20!

You apply for AOS and it costs $1070. You can file the EAD and AP at the same time as AOS and the for those will be waived. If you're struggling financially you can ask for the EAD to be expedited and you will need to prove financial hardship. Worst case scenario the EAD takes 2-3 months.

I realized it by traveling in the US and UK. Staying there and being "surrounded" by people with a more positive attitude makes me complain less! That's even a game with my fiance now, when I complain, for him, I'm being french. :P (I don't deny it, I just work on being more optimistic)

modmodgirl, that's a though decision but as others said, don't take it too fast. And you already invested money and time in the K-1 visa...

My husband's French, and he's the least complaining person I know. In fact, he barely complains and he hates the protests there...

Modmodgirl, I lived in France a year with my husband, and I found the job market to be extremely depressing. My husband has to work odd temp jobs just to get to the next month and those are few in between. You waiting on your finance being able work is going to be hard, but you guys love each them and you will make it work.

Our Love will get us through this. It grows stronger everyday.

you could always do the French thing and go on strike over it... or ask the EU for a subsidy  just kidding :P

i think Harpa Timsah gave some good advice... " Have some honeymoon time, let him figure out how to get around". i know it might make things tight for a few month but i think giving him some time to settle in and see how things work and see whats available will be a good thing in the long run.

good luck

FWIW, I've supported myself and my spouse on what is surely much less than what you (OP) would be making in your profession. We don't have health insurance at all, and we deal with it. We're certainly stretched, but we're not starving. I'm not recommending this as the ideal in any way, but you'd be surprised by what you can make work.

After reading all of these posts about work, I'm discouraged. My fiance is set to come here in April. I'm not a big money earner and have enough to pay for myself ( rent is very high were I live). It's crazy, how is my fiance going to work if they won't give him an employment authorization after we apply for adjustment of status. From what I'm reading on timelines it takes 6 months to a year to adjust the status and get an authorization for employment. It's too difficult. How does the US govt. expect to have someone earn any money during this process? I want to focus on my wedding and my new life, and while reading about the reality, I think he should reconsider coming here, and I should move to France where at least it doesn't cost anything to become a permanent resident and the spouse can have healthcare too without insurance. :(

Does anyone have any suggestions, or is that just the reality for legal immigration to the US?

It doesn't take to a year to get the AOS and AED it only takes 5-7 months, just apply right after you get married apply for AOS and AED then you will get it quick.

For me got married on Aug 23, 2008, file AOS and AED on sept.19, 2008 and got my AED on Feb, and got my 2 years green card on april 08.

Maybe the visa thing is only for the 1 percent who have the money to handle the financial reality of such a decision. Anyway, thanks again for the advice. Best of luck to all of you in this process. (F) (F) (F) My questions are answered. Thanks again.
