Hi,

I wanted to know how long does it take for the Parents/siblings sponsorship to get approved when a US Citizen applies for them. I know the cases are dependent on the regions and countries where your relatives reside, but I hope somebody would be able to throw some light. I have been told that it takes lesser time, if you sponsor your parents.

Thank You.

Immigration is a multi-step process. The US petitions for the foreign family member with an I-130. Approval of the I-130 only means that a preliminary determination has been made that the beneficiary can apply for an immigration visa when one becomes available to the beneficiary. The beneficiary must file the DS-230 and get that approved to get a visa.

Approval of the I-130 can take a few months to a few years. Generally, it doesn't matter how long it takes for siblings because there is a long wait.

Generally, it usually take a year for a US citizen to complete the entire immigration process for a parent. It takes 10-12 years for a sibling. Because Pakistan has groups that support terrorist activities, Pakistani beneficiaries may have to go through an extensive background check called Administrative Processing which can add months or years to the process.
