You hand over the compliance letter and they do the forms. You sign them and keep them do not lose it. You need them to register the car.

ok thanks - so just the compliance letter?? and then take everything to the DMV once I am there?

how do you provide proof of residency to get a new license/register/title if you have just moved?

You can drive on your car while in the USA without having registered it right away( as long as your insurance covers you mind you!my insurance from Canada provided US coverage for 30 days.)

We waited and registered mine later when I had some mail arrive in my name at our address to prove i lived there.

Check your DMV website and give them a call and see what they require.

You'll need to know the value of the car. Check the Kelley Blue Book value and estimate it as low as possible. In the State I moved to I had to pay tax on the value of the vehicle. My husband was able to put me and my car on GEICO as soon as I arrived. When I received my new license and the vehicle was registered I just provided them with the updated information.

Go to the official DMV website for your State and take a look at the forms for registering a vehicle. You will need to provide the lienholder information. In the US the lienholder receives the title to the car until you have paid off the loan. I believe you receive a letter from the lienholder which you take in to get the title. Not too familiar with this part of it as I had no lienholder.

In FL you didn't go to the DMV for the vehicle registration. You went to a place called the Tag Office which is actually the Tax Office. I had to make an appointment with the Foreign Vehicle Registration person. They inspected the car and noted the mileage. Make sure they enter KMs and not MILES for the odometer reading. And make sure they've transcribed that properly on the final documentation.

Some people have not been required to pay the tax on the value of the vehicle. And others (me) had to do so. I argued the point but didn't get anywhere with it. You may have better luck than I did.
