I am looking for a part-time job and my employer is asking for the type of the visa I have and is asking to send him the scan of the SSN and a scan of the greencard I have. He says he needs this for taxes(breedlove). The greencard I have I got through marriage. Am I allowed to send scans of such documents to him if he is not even sure right now if he is going to hire me or not? What are the possible bad consequences of him having the information I have on my greencard?!

Do not send scans of thos documents. Ever. Best way to have your identity stolen right out from under your face.

You aren't even supposed to show thos items unless you have been hired already.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD NUMBER AND GREEN CARD TO THIS PERSON!!!!!!!

If you have not met this person, then you are sending this to a scammer. He will use the information to get you in trouble by making fraudulent documents using your legitimate numbers. He can give them to another person to steal your identity. This person could commit a crime and identify himself/herself as you. Guess who the police will come after???

Legitimate employers will not ask for these information until after you have been hired.

He says he needs it for taxes and a background check. Can he make a background check on me without having these documents?

Another reason why I am asking is because he actually saw me in person and I offered him to show my greencard to prove I am not an illegal immigrant, he told that he didn't need that at that time. Now, a couple of days later he is asking me to send scans of those documents.

Is this a legit company?

Do you know anything about the company wht do they do?

Even from background check perspective they dont need GC or SSN, they can run a background chekc based on your details like Name and DOB.

Most employer would ask you to fill a form indicating your past residental address, your employment history etc. and thats all they need to run a background check.

This is part-time job in a private house. They sent me a copy of the contract online but we haven't signed it yet.

They said that before they hire they need to make a background check.

Can I protect myself by putting a note in the contract that I am providing them with a confidential information they must not share with other people for illegal purpose and is there any example of such agreement?

Not really coz ppl who are going to mis-use your information are going to mis-use it irrespective of what you have in contract.

As I said for background information you only need information and previous history of employment and residential information and most agency who does the background check can do with it.

Some of them require last 4 of SSN, which is ok to share.

Nothing more than that and once you are ready to complete the W9 paperwork is when you provide copy of GC and SSN.

Most employer are not allowed to share their employees infromation forget illegal use for any use without written consent of the employee.

Same would automatically apply to your employer as well.

Usually, the background check is done by a third party, not the company hiring you.

ASK for the 'form' from the third party background checking company. Now, IF the hiring company not have that, then THAT's the trigger to walk away.

Good Luck !

They might need a SS number to run a background check but they don't need a copy of your SS card.

Depending on other US documents you hold, they may not even need to see your greencard.

I wouldn't give out the document, but not so much out of fear of identity theft. I would not give out the documents based on principal. Just because someone thinks you are foreign born, they don't immediately have a right to your documents.
