Hi. Here's the story.

When my husband was 6 or 7 years old his parents divorced. My husband has been living with his mom since and she remarried a guy. His biological parents migrated to US when he was 1. They went through divorce in Hawaii. None of us live in Hawaii now.

All we know about his biological dad is his Korean name and birthdate.

What's the chance that we can find him? Oddly MIL has nothing on his bio dad. oh and he never paid for child support so we have nothing to link him to bank account or anything.

Do lawyers locationg people? or how much would it cost to hire a PI? Any ideas where to start?

Why do you need a lawyer in the whole situation?

I am just trying to understand what you are trying to do, just locate a missing person or something else?

If it is just locating a missing person you can start with Google and see what you get back and then you cna hire a PI and fees would vary from PI to PI and the effort they put into it.

Just trying to contact his bio father. I can say we tried pretty much all the free websites out there you can search with google or yahoo. We even called the phone numbers you can get with those websites. Nothing really helped and we also called Social Security Office to locate him and gave the lady his name and birthdate. She told us that information doesn't match meaning my husband bio father is prolly USC now and there's nothing else she can do for us.

Name and date not matching in SSN database would not mean he is USC.

Even if it matached SSN office does not maintain your current address.

Have u tried something like this?

You wouldn't hire a lawyer, you would hire a private investigator who could search records from around the time of your husband's birth and see if he can start tracking his biological father that way. It would take someone in Hawaii as the information may not be available on computer. You could contact several PIs in Hawaii, and ask them to quote you a price for finding him.

You could also search the SSN Death Index to at least eliminate that possibility. It is free and if you have the SSN it is easy to do a check. Even if you don't have the number but have the name and last known place you may be able to try a number of variables and see if you get a hit. http://www.deathindexes.com/ssdi.html Some sites charge you to access the database but don't go there - you can access it for free - just check another link on this site to find one.

You could also take out a paid ad in the newspaper where he was last known to live and ask if anyone knows where he is and to contact you regarding a family matter. If there is a Korean newspaper in Hawaii, you might want to try and place an ad there. Also, have you tried typing in his name and birth date into a search engine? Try more than just google. Sometimes you might get a random hit. Try variations on names, dates and locations.

You could also try doing a search on public records that are available in Hawaii: http://publicrecords....com/Hawaii.htm . They might provide some more leads. Some of the searches are free and some of them are paid - usually a set fee for a certain amount of time to search the database.

Good luck. Searching for people like this on line used to be a lot easier before opportunists 'stepped in' and started charging you to access information that used to be publicly available before for free.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I would start with a public records search in Hawaii to include arrest records and death records. If you know where he may have lived I would also check there. I would also look at hiring a PI.
