The obvious answer is simple. Go online and change your forwarding address with the U.S. Postal Service. Go to https://www.usps.com/ ; then click on "Manage Your Mail": On drop down list, choose "Forward Mail". Then follow the steps. Do this online and it will take affect on your next delivery date which will be on Tuesday (Monday is national holiday. MLK Day).

Your green card and all mail with your name on it will be forwarded to your new address. Next, apply for address change at USCIS. Sorry to hear about your sad situation. My heart bleeds for you. I went through a painful separation/divorce 15 yrs ago.

The USPS will not forward immigration mail. They wouldn't forward an interview letter for my ex-wife, so I'm pretty sure they will not forward the actual green card mailing.

USCIS mail is government mail which is NOT forwarded.

Can anyone please clarify this?

When I called USCIS they said to change it at the post office, I said government mail wasn't forwarded- they said it was.

I filled out the AR11 but they said that wont change the address for the green card to be sent to. And they cant look at what address is on file until I receive my welcome letter and have a receipt number to give them which will also go to his old address :bonk:

I have changed my address with the post office near where im staying. Should I do it online as well?

I'm not sure what else to do???

Thanks everyone for your supportive messages, it is helping me more than you know.

That 1800 is nicknamed the "misinformation line" for a reason.

I would try the hold on the mail. I know they don't hold DMV mail here in Iowa (that was explained to me VERY clearly when I went for my licence) so you can only hope they will for this.

Here are some links the tell you government mail isn't forwarded

Another choice would be to go to your husband house daily to check the mail, or have a friend or family member do it. It's not mail fraud to check your own mail as long as you don't bother his. I would make sure you tell his family that you GC should be arriving in the mail and it's probably being sent to his address so you've got other people that know if he tries to hide it's arrival. You could try rationalizing with him about it possibly arriving at the house and how it's mail fraud if he doesn't give it to you and how much trouble he could get into.

He used to have a problem with drugs before i met him, but was doing great while we were together, and i think hes gone back to it.

That makes sense. It may be that getting proof of this might be valuable in several ways. Most judges are VERY intolerant of drug abuse in family law matters so if anything is contested in a divorce it could work to your advantage. Even more important, if he is using drugs, that by itself may be relevant in your being able to show that YOU, at least, had entered the marriage in good faith and that it was no fault of yours that the marriage ended. I don't know if that might even be enough to invoke a VAWA claim. But of the greatest importance, if he has a drug problem, you are better off without him! Best of luck to you in the future!

Update on the situation.

3 weeks on he hasnt spoken to me or anything. Im still staying with his family. He went to Jail on a probation violation. Hes out now.

Hes saying i told his probation officer on him, which i didnt.

So now hes put on facebook that hes gonna report me to immigration that i married him for fraud. I HAVE TONS OF EVIDENCE and his family will say THAT THIS MARRIAGE WAS REAL. Hes the one that cheated on me and left me for someone else.

He doesnt have any receipt numbers or any information to give immigration when he calls, as i have all that in my possession. Can he call them without this information?

:crying: :crying: I cant believe this is happening

I dont really want to spend loads of money on an immigration lawyer.

I still havent received my welcome letter or green card in the mail, but i have applied for my SSN.

What an awful situation, I'm really sorry this is happening to you.

Would it be reasonable to assume that someone with a history of drug abuse and on probation(!) may not be able to make the most convincing case against you..?

Dig deep for strength within you, and take care of YOU.

I realize this thread is from last month, and you may have this sorted by now. But I felt compelled to add my advice.

First of all, like everyone else, I am terribly sorry you're going through this.

However, as far as lawyers are concerned, you can always call a lawyer and ask what the consultation fee is. No one's committing you to thousands just to get a consult. Some lawyers offer free consultations.

Also, you can call Catholic Charities, or perhaps even look around for an immigrant support group. I'm sure they will have a network of people to help.

One more thing...I don't know what state you are in, but I know here in FL, they have a service where you can call and have a tele-conference with an atty for $30 for 30 minutes.

I think at this point, you need competent legal advice, and that's where I would start.

Good luck!

To me, your marriage looks beyond saving. He obviously doesn't want the same future as you do and he doesn't deserve you.

Why don't just go home? why stick to a foreign country where love is already gone. I'm sure you have your own family and friends back in the UK who do love you.

It is tough I know, but it is time to move on with life.

FYI - I can personally attest to the fact that the post office will NOT FORWARD USCIS mail.

I had a letter from USCIS, we had moved, I put in our change of address with the post office, regular mail was forwarded onto my new address but the letter was not.

"According to the U.S. Postal Service’s Domestic Mail Manual, section 507 Mailer Services, subsection 3.4.1©, the following types of mail are not forwarded – “mail showing specific instructions of the sender (e.g. Return Service Requested or Change of Service Requested).” USCIS mail (e.g. Texas Service Center) displays the postal meter mark ‘Return Service Requested,’ thereby requiring correspondence to be returned if undeliverable at the address posted for the recipients"

Good luck with everything.

oh my god...............i would beat the hell out of that animal!!!!!!!! as long as you have proofs of bonafide marriage dont worry about it. your cousins can help with affidavit letters singned and dated when is time for ROC. keep them close as witnesses since they are family. girl...here's a small advice. go buy a recording system with a microphone and stick it in your jacket, blouse ,whatever. record all the BS he's been telling you, threats and other stuff and keep the recordings in case he reports you or anything. may sound sci-fi, but it worked for me when i needed it
