My fiance will be traveling at the end of the month, from Europe into JFK and then into Houston from there. My question is...if he arrives at JFK on one flight and then has to take a different airline into Houston, where does he have to go thru customs and/or deal with immigration? JFK or Houston?

Also, there is a 2 1/2 hr wait for the connection from JFK to Houston. Is this enough time if he has to collect his luggage, deal with immigration, and go thru security, etc or should we be planning to get him on a later flight into Houston.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It should be fine. I'm pressuming this has all been booked on one ticket, and he'll have checked-in for both legs of the journey from his departure airport?

If it's all one one ticket, then worst comes to the worst, they have to get him on the next available flight.

What terminal does he arrive at and what terminal does he depart from? It can take some time to get from one to the other, depending on terminals.

Getting an aisle seat quite near the exit is a good idea, then when the plane doors open he can get to the immigration line hopefully before most of the rest on the flight! Then picking up bags and dropping them off again shouldn't take too long.

Unfortunately we booked the tickets separate to help with the cost. And I'm not sure what terminals he will be arriving or departing from. I guess at this point we can just hope for the best and pray he gets through immigration quickly and makes his connecting flight.

I've done this before and it actually wasn't as tricky as it may look at first sight. Check into both flghts online (if possible) and print boarding passes if possible, this will minimise what he has to do at the airport. Then, when he checks in his luggage for his first flight, show the attendant all his flight details and they may be able to check the luggage all the way through to his final destination. If they are able to do this he'll still need to collect it at JFK (to go through customs & immigation), but he'll then be able to 'drop it' at the baggage drop, rather than waiting in line and having to check it into his second flight.

I've done that before when I booked two flight (first on Qantas, second on American Airlines) which were not linked in the computersystems, it save me a lot of time at LAX. I can't guarantee it work like that for you, but it is worth asking questions at the airport from his first point of departure as it may save valuable time at JFK.

2 1/2 hours should be plenty of time to do everything he needs to do. It took me a total of 30 minutes to get through customs and immigration... including the waiting.

Not sure about JFK, but in Chicago, they had a baggage terminal inside the immigration holding area, so there was no mad dash to drop off the luggage after going through immigration, I just handed my luggage over there and went to find my connecting flight.
