Anchorage, Alaska...these are our mountains and there's a ####### load of houses built right on the side of them because it seems like everyone and their brother has to have a view.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Whoop de doo. This may surprise you but we have a lot of mountain ranges in the lower 48 and I get the honor to drive through all of them in every condition constantly. At least when the roads are open anyway.

They have some nasty ones down there. I was raised in Enumclaw, Washington where Chinook Pass begins (Cascade Range) and they close that during the winter months, and going through Grants Pass (Cascade Range) on I-5 was another hairy one that I can remember along with that Denver one that takes you through Eisenhower tunnel. I know there's some bad ones down there...Rockies and Cascades are full of hairy mountain passes, I'm just saying we all do fine up here driving 65+ on the freeways up here in winter as long as people follow the rules and don't act like morons. The cell yakers come to mind in that regard.

We can also do well with the ones that drive too fast for conditions and act like idiots get off the road. If the roads are ice and snow as you said before then 65 is too fast to drive safely. The one you are talking about probably was calling 911 to report the maniac.

Those are bad ones indeed but not even in the top. Truckee is always among the top 5 in the country. Even east of the Rockies have ranges that are nightmares at times. West Virginia has two passes that are always at the top of the list.

I'll vouch for Truckee. There are not too many spots where you drop 4000+ ft that fast. You see way too many trucks with out of state plates burning up a set of brakes going down that hill.

I have been though West Virginia and that interesting, even in my Celica at the time.

I understand what your saying. We even have a law up here that can get you busted for not driving to the conditions. I mean you can be driving 15 mph under the speed limit and if you hit someone because you couldn't handle the conditions it's a ticket. But the snow up here is dry...I mean you can't even make a snowball with it. The cold sucks the moisture right out of it. Atm it's -16 outside and that makes the snow like white sand or something comparable. But your right, Iv'e seen idiots driving like mad men in a white out and cause a three car pile up. Usually it's the ones who first move up here and have those big ####### tires on their trucks. The lifted trucks with big fat tires are the very last thing you want up here. The float on top of the snow and ice instead of digging into it. That and those peeps think because they have a four wheel drive that they can do and handle anything. Usually after the first few months of driving up here they learn.

That snow in the lower 48 is b*tch. It's wet, heavy, slippery and a mofo to drive on. I don't like driving in that snow at all. Vantage hill in Eastern Washington comes to mind...big long ####### hill and it gets the snow now and then.

It can be brutal driving and I am trained for it and do it often. I seen a lot of crazy drivings over every part of this country and Canada. Even been twice to Anchorage and in the middle of winter also but not as a truck driver but did drive around. Snow is easy to drive in but the ice is not safe at 65 mph ever.

Wanted to add that I am getting tired of driving during the winter months and am now ready to look at doing locally now or go back to another line of work. I almost took the big one twice so far this winter.

Truckee has a deserved reputation. Beautiful but bad weather and it is deadly. Many truck drivers are not trained for mountain driving. One called Sandstone in West Virginia. I find it easy but it is deadly if ice and snow are present.
