Flight help?

Hi, My CR1 visa was approved yesterday in London with flying colors, It was almost so easy i had trouble taking it in for the whole day!

Ok heres what i want to know, as our case was expedited and i am planning to fly out the week after next we where looking at the price of flights.

A return is £400 LESS than a one way. Would i be able to book a return just for the sole purpose of the savings even if i wasn't going to use the return trip?

It might sound stupid but flights are of course a lot of money and i would like to know what would be the best for me, Has anyone else done this?!

Yes, definitely. You can try to book your return several months from now, in that case you may actually use the flight for a visit. Or don't bother and book it for a couple weeks after the outbound flight, and just don't use it. You'll be a "no show", you won't get a refund for it, and that's all.

(Note that you can't do it the other way around, I mean not show up for the outbound and try to use the return. If you don't show for the 1st flight, the entire reservation is cancelled.)

round trips are alwasy cheaper. try seetin up fro a return trip in the far future or see if changinf the flight date will cost you but it i might still be less than a one way trip. you dont have to use the the return trip but rember its lieka revolving door when you do use it the next ticket you will by will be a round trip to. but book a return trip for a future date and change it if you need. thats what i did and it worked out !

Yes, you don't need ESTA.

You just use your visa. No need to apply for anything you already got your visa.

If you book a return you should be able to cancel the return flight and, in theory, claim back the tax paid. Its worth giving it a try, airlines don't like having to pay it back to you but you are entitled to it. If you don't fly and don't claim the tax, the airline just pockets the money. Some airlines will charge an admin fee equal to the tax refund, but in the case of international flights you may still get some money back.

Cancelling the return trip if not going to be used is going to be a good idea anyway. The CBP can say you've abandoned your status due to your name being on the outbound flight roster if you don't, then choose to take a trip back to your home country a few years later.

Agree that cancelling the return trip is easier, particularly as you can get some kind of refund (I got a total of £12 - wow!). However, the part about abandoning status, I'm not sure about. I know this can be an issue for the K1 visa, but the OP is coming on a CR1, so shouldn't be an issue as she won't have to adjust status once she lands in the US.

Congrats on the visa approval, OP, and hope you are able to sort out a flight quickly!
