My husband just moved here after receiving approval for the CR-1 visa. How do we get him a social security card now so he can start working? I called the office and the lady told me that he needed his INS form and I-1551 paperwork. What is that exactly? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

He should have incoming paperwork to show he is here legally and possibly a I551 stamp in his passport (same as green card but temporary for 1 year until your card arrives), in his passport.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

When he filed ou the DS-230 did he mark the spot that says Yes please order me a socail security card?

If he did then it usually arrives within 2 weeks

if he did not then you go to social security office 2 weeks after he comes into usa

if he marked yes but does not get it in a few weeks then go to office and apply again or ask where it is

We never filled out a DS-230. He filled out a DS-260, however. I don't know as if there was ever an option to check a box for a social security card. What is the DS-230?

260 must be the electronic version of the 230 mail in form

Did you get some kind of an approval letter? Something official from USCIS stating he is in fact a legal permanent resident? Take that with you and show them his I-551 stamp that is in his passport. The I-551 acts as his temporary green card until the actual one arrives in the mail.

I guess he did check something in his DS-260 that says he would like to apply for the social security card. Does that mean we just wait not for it to come in the mail? Or do we have to do something else?

That should be all you have to do. My wife is from Mexico, and we did the electronic DS-260. I filled it out for her, and checked the box to request a social security card. It arrived about 10 days after her POE.

So, I would sit tight, and if you don't have anything 3 weeks after his POE, you can go to your local social security office and apply there. But, it should be on its way.

Get it now. Take your passport with stamp, etc... and get on down to the SS office.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
