Man Taking Woman's Surname As Middle Name

Has anyone done this? If so, how is it done? Can you just change it when you get married? My state (GA) does allow men to take their wives' surnames if it's at all relevant.

The reason why I'm asking is this: My N-400 IO said something about my middle name needing to be a "given" name, not my maiden name. If that's the case, if my fiance does add my name to his as his middle name, he would have to remove it when it's time for his naturalization because it is not a "given" name? I should have clarified it with my IO, I know, but I was nervous I forgot to press the matter.

Any idea? Thanks.

First of all, forget the N-400. You can change your name to whatever you want at the time you are reborn as an American. The only names that do not work are those that are offensive, like What A. ####### or Bob Noxious and names that could cause problems, like Queen Latifa. Your imagination is the limit, no matter what you believe the I.O. told you.

Marriage is a legal way to change your last name. That can be done in several ways.

Example:

Billy Bob marries Mary May.

He: Billy Bob, Billy May, Billy Bob-May, Billy Bob May, Billy May-Bob, Billy May Bob.

She: Mary May, Mary Bob, Mary May-Bob, Mary May Bob, Mary Bob-May, Mary Bob May.

The basis for this legal name change is the Certificate of Marriage.

That was my understanding, therefore I was confused during my interview. Oh well. I guess we'll have to see. I'll keep on pondering about the silly little things to keep my mind off of the visa journey.
