Palestinians attempted to set out in a motorcade of about 50 cars from Jericho to Ramallah this morning, to protest and challenge the system of Israeli-only roads throughout the West Bank.

Dozens of cars driven by Palestinians from the West Bank tried to leave Jericho this morning in a non-violent protest action, but were stopped by Israeli forces, who blocked the four lanes entering and exiting the Palestinian city.

Non-violent Palestinian protests are nothing new - they have been going on for nearly a century. But they don't get much attention, especially in U.S. media coverage.

I understand the purpose of the road blockades but its completely an issue of punishing everyone for the actions of the .01%

The apparatus of the occupation - the checkpoints, the road blocks, the closures, the restrictions - they are part of a long-term strategy that has nothing to do with punishment, or even security.

The idea is to separate the Palestinian population into isolated cantons, each separate from the others, and each completely surrounded and controlled by the Israeli army, so that people and goods are unable to travel even a mile or two from one community to another without Israeli permission and cooperation - and each area can be easily completely sealed off at any time.

Meanwhile, the spaces in between the cantons are systematically confiscated, declared off-limits to Palestinians, and then opened up for illegal Jewish settlement expansion.

It's just another way to keep a boot on the Palestinians' necks while Israel finishes stealing what's left of their land.

Still, good to see.

It's there, but you have to look for it, as it's virtually ignored by the mainstream media here.

Palestine's Hidden History of Nonviolence

There are non-violent protests occuring nearly every day in Palestine, although they are usually met with violent suppression from Israeli occupation forces and police. The villages of Budrus, Bil'in, Jayyous, Ni'lin and Umm Salamonah hold weekly demonstrations against The Wall being built on their lands. You can even follow them online - some of the villages have developed websites in English:

Bil'in - Official Website

And Budrus was the subject of this amazing documentary:

"Budrus" is a rare case of a Palestinian village where residents succeeded in saving their land from being seized and annexed by Israel via The Wall.

In 2004, the residents of the village of Budrus resisted non-violently for 10 months against the building of The Wall on their lands. Israeli peace and human rights activists also joined in the protests. All participants faced brutal repression from the Israeli army, including live fire, and some of the protesters were arrested and imprisoned.

In the end, the villagers successfully managed to get the wall rerouted, and saved about 95% of their lands.

The film documents a very effective Palestinian popular struggle which united men and women, Israelis and Palestinians, and all Palestinian political parties. As the film shows, the participation of the village women was a crucial factor in the success of the protest.

It's well worth your time if you get the chance to see it.

yes, please add weapons, short range missiles, and people who blow up buses and public places. maybe if Israel was not always being attacked 24/7 365 days a year. we would have peace. maybe you should have your leaders step up to the negotiating table and actually get something done.
