Does my wife need to get a new SS card after I-485 approved?

First of all, thanks for all the kind and nice people here for their helps. My wife has received her 2-year conditional green card (K1 to AOS).

We have a question here. She got her Social Security card before we filed the I-485. It says "Valid for work with DHS authorization only". We were wondering if she needs to get an updated Social Security card after the I-485 was approved.

Hi! YES, now that she has her green card, she will be able to get a new SS card (with the same SS number) without the DHS restriction

Congrats! My wife received her GC about a month ago so I know the feeling.

She can get it removed but she doesn't have to. The newly arrived GC is her "work authorization". The truth is, for any I-9, she'll only need to show her GC and know what her SS# is. The GC is a List A document and stands alone as proof of work authorization so it doesn't matter what is written on the face of the SS card.

Also, you do NOT have to give up her old SS card - when I got my new unrestricted SS card, the lady at the SSA office didn't even ask for my old SS card, just for my green card

The SSA issues 3 types of cards:

Your wife is now eligible for the first type (unrestricted) because she is now a Permanent Resident

Just fill out a new SS-5 form:

since she has both, not need to change it.

Now, maybe she WANTS to change it, but there is no need.

ryna is right. You don't have to get a new SS card - your GC is proof that you're allowed to work in the U.S. We just did it because we wanted all of my documents to be in my married name - my old SS card was in my maiden name because we applied for it before we got married (we thought we were going to need it to get our marriage license).

You don't have to get a new SS card - your GC is proof that you're allowed to work in the U.S. We just did it because we wanted all of my documents to be in my married name - my old SS card was in my maiden name because we applied for it before we got married (we thought we were going to need it to get our marriage license).

It's best to remove the restrictions. Your SS with restrictions was meant to go with the temporary status that the EAD offers. Some places may ask to see a copy of the SS (jobs, banks, and DMV) and a restriction tells them that you are still being processed. I understand that the GC overrides the EAD; however, a restricted SS contradicts your status. It costs nothing, so why not complete the process and enjoy the freedom?

Social security also need to update your status. If something happens which should cause you to be in a position to receive benefits, the restrictions can cause unnecessary delays. Check the Social Security website. http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html

Also, Social security also check your social scurity number and with your W2 every year. It may be possible that this check also tells your status. Try not to give them reasons to doubt it.

If they have their green cards already, then the SS card should not list any restriction statement on it. Go back to the SSA, show their green cards and have it removed.

It can be used for filing taxes. However, I know the tax software I used last year asked if my husband had an unrestricted SS card or not. It needed to be unrestricted to claim the ECI for qualifying children.
