I have tried several “calling cards” and some other ways of calling the Ukraine and have had poor luck in finding a low rate with good sound quality, I can hear her fine, but she ccould hardly hear me. I would go the Magic Jack route (free) but in her area where her parents live the internet is not good. Alla got approved today but she will need to call family, any suggestions????

My Alla, to her friends and family in Russia, uses both Skype and a Cloncom card with great results.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

If you both have SKYPE ddownloaded on your computers, you can see each other and talk free of charge. If not, use a calling card (i.e. Walgreens) and the calls will be much cheaper, approx 25 cents/min. I hope this helps...

I use Skype all the time but if you want a good calling card the best site I always used was www.noblecom.com I haven't used it in ages but it was always reliable for me.

I have used Nobel.com and that seems to work fine. Also understand that no matter what card you use, underseas cables are mostly controlled by major telecom companies not the calling card company. No matter what card you use, the calls will typically go over the same wire. Then you have to contend with the telecom company she uses in the UKR.

Phil,

I use Jupiter to the landline it is about 8.9 cents and to the mobile about 11.9 cents pretty cheap and good quality. Also what I did for my fiance and we will do it for her parents. Skype subscription to call USA for about $4 a month and it is unlimited well (4000 min). So they can just use skype to call her on the mobile or the landline in USA and Canada. Pretty convenient. I just put it on my CC and pretty happy with quality and everything.

Hope this helps.

THANKS----- and just so all of you know--- if they do have access to a good internet connection, buy a magic jack, set it up for a local number in your area, ship it to them. They use it on their computer--you have to call them, but it is UNLIMITED. My problem--not reliable internet where her parents live :(

We use the "Continental" card from "PennyBoss" for calling my MIL and others in Ukraine. Good rates, PINless dialing refill online, full record of calls online. Google "PennyBoss"
